Anti biotics are over used, only use them if the horse needs them. If there is a nasty infection which the body cannot deal with, okay, go for them but wait and see. Horses are tough cookies.
I try not to go for antibiotics unless things are looking quite serious. Antibiotics kill bacteria, (could of guessed that from the name ) and they aren't fussy about what type. Since horses use bacteria in their gut to digest food, it can sometimes cause problems if your horse is a poor doer until the gut flora has redeveloped.
