my poor boy has got a tick on his forehead that is getting bigger and sucking his blood, i looked on the internet for advice and all i found out was that there is nothing legal on the market for them! i have tried loads to get it off but it wont budge! any advice??
thanks,fayex

When you pull them out (dead or alive) make sure you don't leave the head behind or you'll get a nasty infection.

You can put some vaseline on it - will help to suffocate them. Once it's dead it's easier to pull out :)

great, i will cover the b*****d thing in vaseline then try and getting it off.
thanks

You can also apply surgical spirit to kill it, or I have seen people put a match on them (didn't like the idea of lighted matches that close to the horse, to be honest!). But do be careful to get the head out...

oh god! get the vet out?? i didnt realise they were that bad?? what can the vet do then???

Don't worry it's easy to get them off! :)

Ticks hav a corkscrew type mouth which goes into the animals skin clockwise, so all u hav 2 do 2 get it off is get a pair of small tweezers, grasp the tick as close to the horse's body as u can then gently turn it ANTI - clockwise, & it will simply screw out! (No nasty head left in!) DONT BURN THEM WITH A LIT MATCH ETC, this causes them to (in a way!) be "sick" into the horse and all the toxins from the tick are released into the horse when u burn them

Hope this helps!
as u can tell i did a lot of research wen i found one on my horse! they r disgusting things!

If you're not sure whether you got the whole tick (the heads can be really tiny  ) then put it in a pot/bag until you can get someone experienced (YO/RI/vet) to double check. If do leave the head then you may well need to call the vet out to get it removed.

(have to admit I wouldn't want to call the vet everytime - they'd never be off the yard!)

Our dog used to get them and HanGbbn is right that is the correct way to remove them. You can also buy plastic tweezers from the vet especially for getting them off. Just becareful you don't get them on yourself as they can be very nasty.

ok im going up the yard tomorow armed with tweezers and vaseline!
thankyou all for your advice!!:)

easiest and quickest way to get rid of ticks is to get some white spirit on a dob on cotton wool, hold it over the tick for a minute then twist and remove the tick. works ever time. ticks carry lyme's disease and that can kill horses. remove it asap!!!

??? Are ticks that rare in the UK? Where I live they are as common as bugs and I pick a couple off my horse every day (and the cats and myself). They are hard to get off when they are tiny, but if you leave them for a day they suck up some blood and swell up a bit. Then I just pinch them between my fingernails as close to the skin as possible and pull them out with a twist. Of course you can use tweezers. You can also just leave the ticks till they drop off. Once your horse has been bitten Infections from tick bites can happen but are quite rare. After a few hours it does not matter if you pick the tick off or not. If the area round the bite swells up or your horse gets a temperature call the vet and remember to tell them about the tick bite.

It totally depends on where you live. If there are a lot of cattle and sheep around and long grass then there is a higher chance of them getting on your animals. A full tick is no threat to humans. Its the wee ticks, before they are full of blood that may attach to you but they dont do it very often. Only if they are desperate and you are particulary juicey :D My dad had one on his chest once!
Oh and Lymes disease will only happen if your animal is very infested with ticks. A few dont do any harm if you leave them be or remove them correctly.

Bry is always covered on her face, I just pull them out and then squish them or drown them,
Like someone else said the vet wouldn't leave the yard if I called him out!!
Might try the surgical spirit though.

My mum says in the RAF for dogs they used to burnt hem with a cigarette end and then pull them out :p

Havent seen a tick for 5 years since I left South Africa. I remember as a little kid yanking them off the dogs. and a few off myself!

I was told (not sure how true this is) that is you put vaseline on the body of a tick it cant breathe and will drop out. Also my dad used to burn them with a match.
