Hi
Tonight went up with my daughters to ride our 2 horses and discovered they were very muddy. Whilst brushing Bruno our bay cob he was very agitated which is not like him at all as he is very quiet when being brushed. He was particulary agitated when being brushed around his rear area between his legs which was thick of mud. He was also trying to buck whilst being brushed. I asked my daughter to walk him up to top of track to see if he looked lame and he bucked again whilst being walked up. Checked his feet nothing there and no sign of lameness. His tail is constantly swishing as though it is flies. Flies dont usually bother him this bad and he does not wear a fly rug. Have covered him with fly spray too.We put him in field and he immediately bucked and cantered all along the field. Stood and watched him for half an hour and it is like he is agitated walking round and round the field only stopping occaisionally to graze. Any ideas what could be wrong or do you think it just is the flies ??

My friend's pony gets like this when he gets mud between his 'bum cheeks'(!). The area is quite sensitive and when mud dries there on him it chaffs his skin, especially when he moves, and he gets sore and irritated. She has to gently wash it and dry it, then puts on aqueous cream. This could be the prob with your boy ;)

Sounds as though he's in discomfort. Could he have twinged something leaping about the field? Maybe he's uncomfortable in his sheath (sorry), mud up there perhaps?
Sorry i'm not much help :o
Hope he's ok.

Thanks I thought it was maybe the mud that is why we stopped brushing him as poss may have hurt him when trying to get it off. Just the bucking was weird as never seen him buck only when excited about something. Was going to keep him in but he prefers to be out in field

He may be bucking because when he moves it rubs and stings. Maybe try some cream between his legs tomorrow to lubricate the area and stop any more abrasion. Hope he's ok :)

if it is the mud and if its warm enough, maybe hosing off the mud rather than brushing it off will be a little more comfortable for him rather than rubbing the already chaffed skin with a brush???

yes i tryed that but the mud was dryed and didnt come on easily unless i brushed it of wen the mud was a bit wet but it is uncomfortable wen i brush the mud of him what should i do x

I would use a bucket of warm water and gently sponge it off. If its nippy he may well jump about a bit but if you just keep on sluicing it off you should be able to get him all nice and clean.

dollar, if you go to the main section you want to post in there is a button for new threads and you can start a thread of your own.

With regard to your horse, please please get the vet out. You cannot afford to take any chances with her eyes. It may be something simple like a fly bite but its just not worth taking the risk.

Is he a tail rubber? If so check that he hasent got a thorn stuck in the area's that he found most sensative:eek:

has he been stung by something, that's what I'd be looking for, also tail swishing notifies some discomfort so maybe a good dock and bum wash incase of flystrike?

ALoe Vera gel is great on bites and stings, if you find anything....

hope all is well tomorrow...

Annabelle did you manage to get a hold of shelly? Whats Roberts fields like for mud with all the rain we have had?

Dollar3 are there any branches in the field. My old grey used to come in with a swollen eye after poking herself in the eye

Hi =D

I have come across something very similar to this. My boy came in with mud all up his legs, back legs and up by his sheath and belly and I started brushing away and he was veyr irritated and vert sore when I brushed, even picking away bits of mud was painful for him.

I then got some warm soapy water and started to gently sponge away the mud and it still wasn't coming off.

I was getting very worried and then had a thought, that morning the farmer and dumped a load of concrete 'dust and rumble bits' by the gateways and mushed them all in before it had bucketed it down with rain and that part of the gateway got really boggy and as he was being a lively fellow coming in he splattered the mud everywhere.

It was some sort of limestone in the mud that was irritating him, and for a few days I bathed all the areas with a light solution of Hibiscrub and picked the areas gently. It was taking the hair away as well so I was pretty worried. But phoned the vet [As it's a free advice from Vet line] and they said to keep hibiscrubbing it and sudocreming the sore bits. Within a week all the sore bits healed.

Not sure if that helped or not, jsut wondering if maybe the mud was from a different area? A muddy track you've ridden on perhaps? a different part of the field, sometimes different sorts of clay or mud can irritate sensitive skinned chaps =D

Hope that was of any help, hope he's alright too. x
