On an island
I know this has been asked before - sorry in advance! I'd like anybodys opinions please. I have had it for Joe years ago, not sure it really helped but bought some last week for Storm, sort of anticipating her playing up because of being unsettled with the newcomer in town!
She's been on it four days now - not sure if it is working or making her worse? Thoughts or experiences please!

I find it makes Harvey a lot better but then we haven't had to use it for the last two months as he has been a lot calmer recently anyway but before that he was on it for about 18 months

Hmmm. I started Stormy on it last Saturday, I think it might just be a coincidence that we're having leading issues! I'll persist with it and see what happens. Did Harvey like the taste? Storm hates it! I have to disguise it with her Happy Hoof and a bit of Baileys Lo-cal. Maybe that's why she's mad with me?!!!!!!

Harvey doesn't mind the taste, but a lot don't like it. I mix it in with a bit of speedibeet for him. I do find Baileys Lo-Cal makes him sparky though. (we have two on baileys lo-cal and harvey is on topspec comprehensive (expensive pony!!) )

It can take a while to build up in the system so any effects you are getting now may just be co incidence.

I had Prince on it for about 6 months after talking to a very knowledgeable and nice equine nutritionist who recommended it. We finished the last tub a month ago and I decided to swap to a cheaper brand to see what happened (I was considering stopping it altogether now anyway). My understanding is that any calmer will take 4-5weeks to really start doing anything and that feeding it at regular intervals helps lots.

Tbh, I think it might have been placebo effect if it worked although in fairness it's hard to say if it was the moving to part livery (intead of field 24/7) and all the routine that came with that or whether the supplement really did calm him

I did do lots of research on it though and reached the conclusion (based on evidence) that calmers will only have a calming effect on a horse that is deficient in the ingredients - usually magnesium. Easy to say, but how do you find out if your horse is magnesium deficient in the first place!??! Sounds like an expensive blood test methinks!

I used it successfully with Arnie although I have since managed to change to plain calmag at a fraction of the cost.

What I will say though is that Arnie went absolutely ballistic on Baileys Lo Cal (and Blue Chip and virtually every other feed balancer I tried him on). He was a psycho:eek:

Not used this one before but have had good results with Equine Americas Magnitude. It lasts ages as you only use a very small amount of it

Yes I know what you mean about knowing if they're deficient in mag or not - but I did ask our vet about that and he said that even if they weren't deficient he knew of a calmer that would help.
I will persist with this (might as well now I've shelled out for it!) and see what happens.
