Im just about to start my mare on Topspec lite feed, doesn't anyone give their horse it and what are the reults?

I feed it to Little Un & have been pleased with it. Having said that he's a problem free pony anyway (fingers crossd!).

Feet are good, proper rock crunchers. He's unshod & we're in a very flinty area but he's perfectly happy to march over any ground at any pace & there's not even much chipping unless I let them get too long.

Coat absolutely gleams & has lovely dapples (he's bay). A flick over with a brush & he can look like I've spent hours body brushing ;).

He's a lovely level headed chap, plenty of energy when he's ridden but not silly or fizzy.

I really do rate Top Spec products. As I said LU is pretty straightforward so I wouldn't expect problems (though a different balancer did make him rather sharp). Jim, on the other hand, is a feeding minefield & finding Top Spec has been a Godsend - the comprehensive balancer plus the cool condition cubes keep him calm, looking good & with plenty of controllable energy.

No, you just feed it as it is. It's very palatable too, I sometimes use it as a treat/reward if I'm tring to teach him something.

I have 2 on it and they look fab, very glossy coats, etc. I currently feed by hand as mine don't need anything else with it during the summer and they love it.

if I were to carry this on during the winter time, what else would you reckon mend that I feed with this mix?

Depends on your situation - how much grass/hay/haylage your horse gets and the quality of the same, and how much nutrition your horse extracts from it (ie, presumably as you're looking at the lite version, you've got a good doer!). I usually feed unmollassed sugar beet in addition to hay during the winter months - which were literally January to March last winter - as we have lots of grass.

The balancer gives the horse *all* its vitamin and mineral requirements, the lite version without extra calories being added, so you could upgrade to the regular topspec comprehensive or leisure time if you decided in winter that they did need more calories and wanted to add them in that way, or you could use sugar beet and/or a chaff to bulk the feed out. If you want to stay with the topspec range you could look at the fibreplus cubes for feeding alongside the balancer.

Depends on how well she winters & what sort of work you're doing. If she's a good doer you may find that TS Lite plus hay & maybe something like Dengie HiFi is fine. If that isn't enough then try adding some sort of high fibre cube or Speedibeet.

If she doesn't winter well I'd swap to the Top Spec Comprehensive balancer with alfalfa, sugar beet & maybe TS Cool Condition cubes as well as ad lib hay.

What does she normally have in the winter & how well does she do on it?

At the minute I feed the Top spec comprehensive at half measures, shes only been on this a few weeks and I can see a difference in coat and skin quality, this is something she will definetly stay on, winter time will probs ad some Top spec cool condition cubes and the top spec fibre plus, IF she dosent do well over winter and I certainly dont think that will happen I will maybe add speedi beat to it as well, cant recommend the Top spec range highly enough

Top Spec Lite vs Baileys Lo-Cal

I'm currently feeding both my good doers Dengi HiFi Lite & Baileys Lo-Cal but was considering giving Top Spec a try becuase on paper it seems to have the edge in terms of vit's etc.

Has anyone experience of both Top Spec Lite & Balieys Lo-Cal, which one gave better results in terms of coat, hooves etc?

I've tried both.

Jim went loopy on Lo Cal, he was literally dangerous to be around & didn't know what to do with himself. Other horses were avoiding him in the field! Top Spec suits him, but as I said before he's a tricky one to feed so maybe not the best to look at.

I also tried Little Un on Lo Cal. He's a very straightforward chap who'll eat anything & everything - cereals, molasses etc have no adverse effect on him except for making him fatter. My feed merchant doesn't stock TS Lite as standard so I thought I'd give Lo Cal a try - imagine my shock when he started bouncing about too much & getting stroppy . I didn't know he knew how to bounce & strop!!! Ordered in TS Lite & gave away Lo Cal to an elderly TB to top dress his existing feed. TB was fine on it & Little Un calmed back down to his normal sunny, easy going self on the TS Lite. As I said before he has a fantastic coat, amazingly good feet & plenty of energy so I'm happy.

For either of mine I'd chose TS Lite over Baileys Lo Cal every time.

usually give mine beet and herble mix in the winter, she's a good doer too. do you think i should stop the beet and herble mix in the winter and just stick we the top spec lite along with hay?

kizz1e it all depends on how she looks. There's a lot of science in feeding nowadays but it's still an art too - no amount of book learning will ever replace a master's eye.

I'd still go with my earlier suggestion for winter feeding.

Ditto go on how she looks, dont think a balancer and ad lib forgae may be enough at winter BUT it may be, even try the cool condition cubes with a little speedi beat or dengie added and the Top spec fibre plus
