My horse gets SERIOUSLY sweaty in the trailer, we have even added extra ventilation but made no difference.

anywhere.

What are people findings with travel/sweat rugs

Are the old fashioned "string vests" any good? Should they have something over the top, if so what?

What about fleeces, any particular makes, not so good makes?

Waffle coolers?

The new weatherbeta one that is a combo of fleece and mesh?

HELP!!!!

I like a good quality breathable waffle cooler for when its warmer. Fal do a couple of really good ones, one of which is currantly on sale on Equestrian Clearance. In cooler wheather, I reckon you just can't beat a Thermatex. Its wicks away sweat like nothing else and keeps them very comfortable.

we dont travel them in a sweat rug (or anything just leg boots)

mainly cos they get sweaty, if your worried about dust just arrive earlier and take a decent soft brush and show sheen.

we used to have a horse who would get so worked up in the wagon (stallion, would load perfectly so not fear) he would be white lathered and run up.
we tried to only take him to big show with stabling and arrive either rediculously early or the day before. he would be bathed on the show ground and had cold tea before the journey to settle him and when he arrived (he loved it)

unless you really need a rug why not go naked???

Thanks for the tip on Equestrian Clearance! :D

I think Sal's sweating problem is partly nerves and partly because it is physically hard work for him to stay balanced while the vehicle moves.

:)
my horse sweats in teh box so ive solved problem by putting a string vest tyupe sweat rug under a light cooler.
going naked not an option, if she sweats I dont want her to get a chill.

sweating probably not from heat as such but from nerves/excitment?

Think my boy has the same problem, getting excited and balancing himself, he loves the box, gets excited when he sees it practically runs up ramp, he loves days out!!!

I did try him without a rug at all, he got just as sweaty and managed to rub a lump of fur of his point of hip, I checked the trailer sides and the padding was all intact, So I think I he needs a rug for protection as well!!:)

I will try the string vest under his fleece as going 10 miles for lesson tommorrow amd will take some show sheen.

Failing that, I either have to save up for a thermatex or an air conditioned lorry? hmmmm guess it depends on saturdays lottery results!!!!

Do you have to have a travel rug on?

The only time I travelled my mare any distance she was hot and sweaty as I thought she might be so I didn't see why I needed to rug

Well the idea of putting a travel rug on is so that at least some of the moisture gets wicked away (ie through fleece, mesh, knitted material etc) from the body, to hopefully get them there less sweaty. and stop them getting a chill on arrival. Though my boy seems just as sweaty with or without rug.

I may try no rug next time, depending on tommorrows outcome, we are going pretty early and it is the malverns so usually damp and chilly there!!

I must say when its mild I travel my mare without a rug unless she is sweating from working - then I'd use a waffle cooler. If its hot on those rare summer days, I swill her off with water, use a sweat scraper and travel her with no rug! there is nothing that I'd expect her to rub herself on in my box though.

Mrs P travels without a rug unless it's chilly, in which case she wears a Thermotex cooler. She is a hot hoss & gets sweaty very easily, I've learned from experience not to rug her if she's in the least bit warm when she travels.

well travelled Charlie in string vest & fleece early yesterday, no sweat when we got there.

After lesson and wash down, popped string cest on wile we had cup of tea etc and took him home in string vest as day had warmed up, no sweat wehn we get home, and only a little rub on hip, (where the hell is he doing it?!)

So I think he has finally relaxed into this travelling lark. Loaded better than ever, I reckon it would have been to let him load himself, as i could not keep up leading him, He jumped in, peered out the window and looked at me as if to say "where we foing today mom?".

Im keeping my ponies naked whilst travelling at the moment. puzz gets way over heated in the trailer and the ponies have a mahoosive coat so they dont need anything, it just depends on how mucky your horse/pony gets in the trailer but dont jeapodise your horses comfort for cleanliness.
