is it bad for horses to be turned out in winter in an outdoor menage?
they would have ad-lib hay
and be ridden every day, with the option of an hours grass turnout on saturdays and sundays?
they would be in it all day and in at night :o

depends on the alternative ;)

If theres good grass, then obviously thats preferable.

But if its in the school, or stay in/ dangerously muddy field, then the school with ad lib hay is better than nothing, IMO anyway :)

there is the perfect yard for us, about 2 mins down the road.
they have too many horses to give us 24/7 turnout in winter but have offered their outdoor menage (private yard)
they have a small field we could have for a couple of hours on the weekend , but any more and it would get too muddy.

the other alternitive is wayy more expensive, and far away so i wouldnt even get to see them every day :(

They'll be fine, mine has been in the arena 24/7 since I brought him home and out at grass during the day and in at night for the last week or so and he's perfectly happy, as long as they have plenty of hay to keep them occupied they'll be fine, especially with the grass on the weekend. :)

I'd be concerned that they've got too many horses for the available turnout! They'd be better cutting down the number of horses and offering more turnout imo.

Personally I would want and expect more than an hours turnout a day and wouldn't go to a yard that only offered that.

they would have the menage for the whole day ...
its not a livery yard either. its my mums friends yard :)

What's going to happen to your horse every time someone wants to ride in the school? If he has to keep being put in his stable so the school can be used, are you sure they're going to remember to put him back out again? Is he going to mind going in and out and in and out again?

If the yard is willing to squeeze horses into any and all available spaces, do they really have the horses best interests at heart?

One thing I want to make apparent is, where is the hay going to be?

I ask, as I have known horses getting colic from getting sand into their system. So if they are in the school, you don't want any amount of sand going in them whilst they are eating. (I have even known it to happen when horses have been eating bits of grass at the sideo of the school)

So be careful about this.

Also as someone else said, what will happen if someone wants to use the school?

Lastly do they get turnout in the summer in the fields??

it would be in haynets / a manger, not quite sure.
the school is that rubber stuff.

there is an indoor school, no one uses the outdoor in winter

and yes, they would have an acre and a half summer turnout :)
