Does anyone else have a dog that is on these for their heart? Vets just prescribed them today - dog has had a night cough for a couple of years and it's just starting to happen a little during the day she's also started panting a little when she's walked.

How old and what type of doggy is she?

I work at a vets and see a few dogs on vetmedin and it does really good things for them.

My dog has a cough mostly on an evening but ocassionally during the day. Vet said her heart seems slightly enlarged but doesn't want her on meds until it gets worse (if it does). Only way to diagnose properly was to xray and she's 13 and a half so not something we want to do as she's a bit old for random anaesthetics.

She's supposed to be a Jack Russell but I think there is a bit of something else thrown in. She is 11 and a half and seems happy enough in her self on Sunday she started coughing whilst out walking and she has been panting a little for a while when we go out so thought it was probably time she was looked at again. The vets have told me previously that the only way to be sure would be xrays etc but this time they suggested trying her on Vetmedin and see if it improves. If not they said they could tweek it a bit and failing that then xrays.

I have an 8yo Cavalier King Charles who is on Vetmedin and has been for over a year, he has a very enlarged heart (you can feel it beating terribly) and started fainting, he is quite happily walking along, you see a little wobble and then he falls down, stays there panting and scrabbling for a little while (it is horrible to see) and then gets up, he was having about 10 faints a day, but with vetmedin (which he loves, waits every morning and night by the place it is kept for his tablet) it is about 1 or 2. He is very underweight, but still basically happy if a little tired. Unfortunately now he needs diuretics as his heart condition worsens, but I would happily put a dog on vetmedin from my experience, it has certainly made a difference to my boy. Having 10 faints meant we really couldnt take him anywere off lead, and that is what he loves. He can't keep up with his friends (two 12 year olds!!!) but he potters round the horse fields and gets up the hill in his own time. I do hope it helps your dog.

Sounds like it may well help your pooch then. As the vet said xrays are the only real way to fully diagnose but treating her with vetmedin won't do her any harm and may well do her the world of good.

Alfiesmum sadly cavvies are know for heart probs bless them. Glad your little dog is doing better on the medication though. We have some cavvie patients on 2 types of heart meds and dierectics too!

Sparklie

Hi there, yes it is so sad, he is the third Cavvie I have had and all had heart probs quite young, he is actually the oldest one I have had!!! At 8!!

The other two didnt die of heart probs though, even worse, they both got brain tumours!!!!

I think little Barney might be my last one, it is too heartbreaking, the other two 12yo are both rescues and cross breeds and very healthy still.

Glad to know there are others surviving with it though, thanks Sparklie.
