Hey there guys.

I have a fairly spirited Welsh Section A mare who I'm turning into my project pony. My goal is to get her under the saddle properly. My only worry is the weight she could carry.

I know that many breeds are bred specifically for weight carrying (especially breeds like Welsh cobs) but I just need to make sure what sort of weights she can carry at a maximum to ensure I can find the right size rider for her.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thank you!

20% of their body weight as adults, I'd be on the cautious side of that until her back muscles build and are used to carrying a rider :)

As Jessey says, you do not give her age but give her plenty of time to fully mature, Welsh A can take a tad longer than some, their Character can be challenging and I would suggest you look for a lightweight experienced adult who can react to those challenges safely. plenty of groundwork - they are very intelligent and the high spirit can work in their favour as ridden ponies if harnessed correctly. - good luck!
