ATM we have Hunter and Bedmax-I prefer the bigger chunks of Bedmax, but as I'm about to strike out on my own I realise I've had very limited exposure to alternatives. I don't want to use straw, but it would be useful to hear what others use, what they like and what they don't etc.

I'll have rubber matting down and (not sure if this changes preferences) I will most definitely not be deep littering!:)

Rubber mats as the flooring underneath isn't great, thin layer of shavings where she wees taken out weekly. Normal straw bed on top mucked out daily.

Cheap and clean :)

I've got rubber mats too.
I put a thin patch of shavings (just changed to Allspan) in the far corner of the stables.
Shavings are easy to store as don't take up much room (compared to straw for example). Beds are easy to clean, shavings are absorbant for pee, looks and smells nice, easy to identify and eliminate droppings.
Muck heap isn't huge either (again compared to straw).

Have tried flax and it was awful. Not absorbant, slips about - reminded me of chopped up straw but even worse.
Tried straw but was taking out 2 wheelbarrows and putting in a small bale a day before bed had the impression of being clean :o
Did a trial with Aubiose (in bunnie's cages) but I'm having trouble demonstrating the "10 times as absorbant as shavings" thing

I use rubber matting with shredded paper - lovely and warm in the winter, dust free and horses are not prone to eating it.

The best thing is that it's free as I work in a hospital!

You can buy shredded paper as I used to buy it years ago. It was approximately £3.00 per bale and I would definitely recommended it!

Even if my bedding wasn't free I don't think I would use anything else as I am a big paper fan!

Rubber Matting - with cover of shavings or Bliss depending which I can get hold of and the price !!

I have rubber matting and use chopped rape straw bedding. It's cheaper round here than shavings, treated with eucalyptus so he doesn't try to eat it and seems a little more absorbant than shavings. It would deep litter very well as it sticks together very well but i don't like deep littering so i don't bother! It also rots down quicker on the muck heap so my YO prefers it from that point of view.

Allspan shavings

Hi
Does anyone know where I can get Allspan shavings from? From researching forums They seem to be "fluffy", "absorbant"and "dust free"
many thanks for your help
:)

Mix of Aubiose and (to keep costs down), Arbuthnott stovies wood pellets (we are in N Scotland). Way way better than shavings or straw and def cheaper than shavings cos I use less. Horse lies down more as well and mucking out much quicker.

Shavings, and flippin loads of them too. I have never seen such a deep bed! But as Lulu belongs to someone else I don't really have any say in that!

Thanks all I'm looking at pellets tomorrow-my girl wees like a racehorse and I want something super-absorbent so she doesn't show me up with wee trails out of the new stable!!:)
