hiya, im looking to go to my first competition in a few months. Dressage or showing? when im used to it i will mainly do showjumping and dressage, not showing. but wasnt sure if showing is a good start, and i have a friend to come with me too, as she shows her horses. If i choose showing, what will i need? i dont really want to by a dressage and showing jacket, as the showing one wont be used often. same with buying beige jodhpurs, they will only be used about 2 times, and i dont have the money to just be buying things to not be used. Can i show in a navy jacket and white breeches? with a plain black skull cap or a velvet navy hat cover on it?

What you wear for showing is going to depend very much on what classes you enter, maybe have a look in some magazines like Horse and Hound ad see what's worn for the classes you'll enter?

Dressage it's perfectly acceptable at lower levels to compete in tweed jacket and beige breeches.

I did a little low level dressage (ha ha, think walk and trot) and showing with my native pony. I did every class in the same outfit, beige breeches, brown boots, a really rather nice tweed jacket in a blue and grey check (he was grey) and a navy velvet hat.

Alas, the gear for show jumping really is quite different, and unless it was a riding club level event I think you'd get some odd looks showing in your show jumping gear. @Doodle92 on here would know if you could get away with it for dressage (and probably how to fix it to do both disciplines for less!).

You can get pretty much everything you need secondhand. So you could buy what you want based on the classes you wish to do and keep or sell on.
If you buy pale coloured jodhpurs you can still use for dressage, they don't have to be white.

Maybe have a look on your local equestrian FB groups for second hand jackets? Just to keep you going until you decide what to do. Do you still need to wear pale coloured breeches for competing? I'm not at all up to speed but I thought there'd been a movement to allow women to wear dark breeches to save possible embarrassment at period time.

That's under BRC rules. Others will probably follow suit.
I think other countries already allow the use of dark colours.

I wear light beige breaches for dressage. Most are in white but I can’t make myself do that! It would be dirty in a second. Also a black jacket. That is affiliated BD. Navy jackets fine as are dark grey.

Unaffiliated dressage then a tweed jacket perfectly acceptable with beige jodhs.

Tweed is technically allowed bd providing it is a muted tweed but I don’t think i have ever actually seen it.

Bd will now accept the white jodhs with navy seat that have just come out. But they wouldn’t accept all dark

Of course the exception is quest where you can wear what you like. Around here most still go as for pure BD tho.

Remember for any dressage you need to show your number on either side of the horse.

@Doodle92 my friend used to compete Advanced Medium BD in tweed, if she was taking several horses it kept her black jacket etc clean for the PSG class - a factor when also taking a young child :)

I didn't realise jackets were now optional! I thought that was something a show organiser could allow in hot weather, not that it was a rider choice.

I think you still have to in championships. In summer last year I saw a few without jackets but I wouldn’t subject people to see my tummy 😂

I like tweed or navy. I don't like black.
If the jacket is optional though you have to iron the shirt and not just pop a bib under. 😂

I had beige jods, tweed or black jacket, white stock with one of my son's school shirts! Jackets were both 2nd hand, and I wore either or, for both dressage and show jumping.

@newforest I bought myself a new high tech show shirt. It’s brilliant cos it never gets creases, just gets thrown in machine and is practically dry when it comes out. This makes me very happy 😂. I even got a load of money off as it had a stain from the shop. This washed out no problem so that made me even happier 😂x2

Seems this is another post from a new poster, people give advice/suggestions/answers the question but the poster never comes back.

Maybe useful for others tho.

@Doodle92 I thought that about the new poster. Why would you take all the trouble of signing up to a forum and then not look at the answers to your question? Weird. There you go though.

There are a lot of lurkers that don't post, so it could be useful info for someone else.

I like the new show shirt idea that easy to deal with, a bit like a base layer I guess.
Though I still like the sweatshirts I had and that was the only time you wanted to get things matched up.

I think they spread the wealth.... ask on several forums and then read and maybe reply. There are a few I pop in on. I see the exact same questions, sometimes same user names, other times not. Answers vary depending on site. Some nice. Some not so nice. I like this forum. It has a community feel.
