Another food thread :p

I am quite interested in the feeding side of horses at the moment and am just doing research really to see what you guys feed your horses.

Apart from the usual - carrots - apples and so on.

A friend of mine feeds her horse on rolled oats which seems to date quite well in history - as it seems oats were the feed given to horses hundreds of years ago.

Thank you all.

Mine mostly just gets the usual fruit and veg and mints.

He doesn't like chocolate (spat it out in disgust) or chocolate chip muffins :o But he is rather partial to the odd digestive biscuit or slice of bread and he does love Dr Pepper :p

Apples and carrots, and occasionally mints if I've bought them for me. That's it :D
I am a real stickler for feed. He gets the required amounts of hard feed with the odd apple or a few carrots in it, he has good grazing, and he very occasionally gets a couple of treats. I'm forever having to ask people not to hand feed him, as he is far too clever for his own good and goes on pocket searching rampages, and has even nipped a few people who weren't quite quick enough, which is something I simply will not tolerate. I dislike people feeding him sweets, crisps or other human food - most of it is not particularly good for humans, much less so good for a horse with a sensitive digestive system!

I'm the same with my dog as well. She gets fed a good quality dog food, and has a few treats when we do training sessions. She is a bit of a Hoover and sometimes gets bits and pieces that drop on the floor, but I dislike her being fed "people food" as a matter of course, as she gets the right calories from her pet food. She went to stay with my mum for a week and a half, and came home with a little pot-belly from being given her own food AND a big bowl of left overs every day - it took a lot of runs at the field to get the weight off her again!

Same as the rest really. Try and keep it sensible and not offer junk. Mine loves grapes but doesnt like bananas. Adores Weetabix too.

I agree about dogs being fed 'people' food, that annoys me! There's so many people don't realise that dogs aren't supposed to be fed salt! Then feed their dogs crisps/corned beef!! argh!! :p but anyway i won't go into that any further:p

Shain looveessss Dried fruit e.g. raisins! she'll eat most types of fruit including banana, cherries, grapes, melon, orange etc, She eats the skins too! lol! she also likes smoothie:p she only gets them as a rare treat tho:p hehe

she only gets it in small bits tho incase she gets a sore tummy:p

Ours love taste sensations ! Stanners and Trig will eat pretty much anything :D

If I'm eating something I might give them a bit. So far Stan likes (as well as the usual stuff)

Toast with Quince jelly and/or peanut butter on
Tea
Bourbon cream biscuits
Ice cream - the 99/cone sort and the crumbs from Brunch's
Broccoli
Banana
Mini twix
Peas
Spinach
The odd chip (no vinegar though)

Trigger eats all that too but he also likes bits of bacon roll

G was a savage for Mini mars bars, murray mints and lettuce :)

Mine doesn't generally get any human food, he's more than happy with his horsey food :p I did give him a soft mint the other day though, which he ate but with a very dubious look on his face!

i feed mine apples carrots and BANANAS, which is hilarious if your horse has never tried it, they expect something hard and get soft mush. haha

nutrigrain bars
oat cakes
oatabix
wheatabix
ginger nut biscuits
extra strong mints
foxes glacier mints
anaseed sweets
jam butties (on brown bread)
golden syrup

polos
warm oats with golden syrup for breakfasts in winter
oranges
love hearts (only as a treat once in a blue moon, like when we're trying to do something for the first time.)
parmaviolets (as above)
he likes to steal chips from me though i am carefull that he only has one or two and thats it because of the starch

my girl is quite a fussy eater, she has the normaly apples and carrots, mints
she also likes:
swede
pears
brussel sprouts (odd horse)
sometimes the odd biscuit, although nothing chocolatey
hmmm, normally she wont eat anything human so i just stick to horsey foods:)

I was happily eating a penut butter roll waiting for the farrier when Mr Ace munched half of it out my hand. Oh he loved it!! Silly horse!

Normally carrots for treats now and again, A swede hung up in the stable instead of a lick it and guinness at xmas are the treats mine get. Windfall apples from the garden too, I'm a boring mum they don't get anything exciting unless the theif it out my hands!
