Can anyone tell me, what exactly is a British Riding Pony:confused: .

I understand that it can have Arab or T/B in it. But what else is in it, and does it have to have a certain amount of this, to that? What is its criteria?

Is it actually a breed in its own right, or is it a type?

This question has bugged me for some time, so I'd be really grateful if someone could enlighten me:)

A pony more like a small horse than a tubby pony:rolleyes: !

Developed in the UK mainly crossing natives with TB's or Arabians. Typically show ponies, show hunters and working hunters. Not a breed as such but recognised as one I think.

I'm sure someone with more knowledge than I can enlighten you further.

I was actually wondering the same thing a few weeks ago when reading a breeds book. The British Riding Pony was classed as a breed in the book.... but then it contradicted itself by saying this line : "This breed is more of a type" I lent the book to friend and havent seen it since I just couldnt rely on the information it gave!

Personally I think it is more of a sub-type. I think its a bit like Paint horses who can be classed as both breeds and types as generally any british pony which can be ridden is a British Riding Pony. However... I do recall the book saying that to be registered as a breed the pony must have some TB/Arab blood in it so I guess there is a breeding guidline. Personally they are bear little remblence to the ponies I know and love (natives :) ) they are just too refined.

Sorry I didnt answer your question I've just confused myself futher!

The National Pony Society lists both Riding Ponies and Hunter Ponies under it's breeds but I think they are really a type more than anything. As I said before a cross between native and something hot blooded to basically produce a childs hack or hunter.

My daughters pony was bought as a hunter pony and I always put it down to type not breed. He is actually passported with the NPS but not as a particular breed so I guess they do regard it as a type after all:rolleyes:

I think there is a breed register but not sure of its name. I know a lot of breeders specialise in these, typically the quality show ponies you see at major shows. A local stud produces them out of Welsh B outcrossed every few generations with small TBs.

Contact one of the showing organisations such as BSPS. I am sure they will have all the facts

Just had a look at horsequest and a lot of the show ponies (riding ponies) are registered as partbreds e.g. PBA, PBW, which would make sense - I think. I'm sure someone else will enlighten us all soon:) .
