Now I know you are all probably cracking up at this question as majority of you guys are british but I have never heard this term before!

I imagine it to be somewhere that houses your horse for you? But more details would be great eg - what service they provide, how much etc?

Also does anyone know if there is this sort of thing in NZ?

i think liverly is where your horse bords and you do all the work yourself? but im just guessing im not in the uk so dont relly know

Can't it also mean a person - ie someone who boards their horse there - as in 'I was talking to one of the liveries...'?

A livery in the UK is a place where you can board your horse. This can be in stables or in a field or a combination of the 2.
There are 4 kinds of livery, 1 is DIY (do it yourself) where you 'rent' a stable and you are offered a field to be able to turn your horse out for grazing and excercise, you have to do EVERYTHING, mucking out, feeding, grooming, riding etc. 2 is part livery which can vary as to what the yard owner offers but most of the time, they will feed your horse for you (hard food needs to be prepared by you) and will turn out and bring in. You still need to go to muck out, groom, and ride. 3 is full livery, where they will do everything to look after your horse, ie feed, groom, muck out, all you need to do is go and enjoy riding your horse. 4 is working livery, where you board your horse at a riding school and they use your horse in the school, they also take over the responsibilty of taking care of the horse.
DIY livery can start from as little as £15 a week depending on facilities (if you have use of an indoor floodlit menage then you can expect to pay more ) Full livery can be anything upto £150 a week for some yards.
Of course, I am only quoting you prices from my local area, so I am sure they vary a lot as to where you live.
Hope that has helped clear that up for you :)

When you have had a rotten day, having had no sleep the night before, been hastled by white van man, and nearly killed by noisy, speeding big lorry man, who has no respect for you or your horse, and all-in-all had a teeth-gritting time all round, then you get home, have a drink, or two, or three, to make yourself feel better, then wake up next morning feeling like death!

That's called a "Livery!" - your liver just can't take it, especiallly when you are over 40! :( :( :(

lol, thats soo funny. Its like when my Aussie instructer said lets do some "float" loading I just looked at her gone out............lol :D Yeah its just a yard where you keep your horses and pay like £20 a week for maybe a stable, field, indoor or outdoor school and somewhere to keep your tack and feed :D

I am a livery. That is to say I have a horse on livery at a livery yard.

We have signs up on the entrances to the livery stables saying "liveries and staff only", which is a polite way of saying, "oi, you show jumping pikeys keep out" ;)
