On an island
Didn't want to hi-jack the thread @newforest started about routine etc. But what jobs do you all put off or say to yourself "I'll do that later".....
Mine would be picking hooves out late afternoon when they come up the yard (they get done twice a day but for some reason the last pick out I put off).
Walking the field checking the fencing (Fuzzy just loves to make her own fencing arrangements)
Technically I could do the fence checking soon as they come up for late afternoon snoozies. But I don't.

And what jobs do you relish?
I never put off putting new straw down. Absolutely love the stuff. (It is probably softer and comfier than my current mattress!)
Love sweeping up. Even though my hard is stoned, there is concrete in the ginnel and I sweep inside the byre (Storm likes a neat bed lol).
So go on.......tell me..............

Answering this, taking her out 😆 🤣
Which kinda should be before all other ruddy jobs!!

I strip graze, so the internal fencing is checked daily in that respect.

I probably delay tidying up the muck heap, because I am the only one who cares to stamp it down now we are only using the one.

Oooh I love sorting the muck heap! Sad I know.
I take delight in forking it over - its creeping lol and in the wrong direction. I have an old one which is getting emptied within the next few weeks - but the newer one is creeping too far into the shelter paddock behind the byre. I think its really good exercise too, mr t says I look like a rat skittering about on top of it - hahahahaha. I am just happiest with a fork in one hand......... 🤭

I couldn't settle to ride or do anything in hand before doing the chores. I did it a few times the other way around and regretted it.

I have always been flexible. Sometimes I'd ride first, move strip grazing/do chores. Other times it was chores then ride.
When I was at the yard I generally only went once a day. I knew others would go to do theres as some point and whilst mine weren't in the same fields as others, they could be seen so if there was any issues I would get a phone call or message. Likewise I wasnt checking or doing other people's but if I spotted anything wrong I would message.
Summer my routine was go after work. Id take a change of clothes and boots each morning in the car and go straight from work to the yard. Sit in the car and change. I got good at that. From autumn clock change I would get up and go at 6am in the weekday. Do chores, tack up as it was getting light, quick hack and back home 8.30/9 to go to work. Riding after work just wasn't possible.

Once I moved them home I had similar routine winter/summer routine. As I had acquired riders to exercise/ hack with me I was obviously dependent on when they could come.
Days where they didn't ride with me in the summer, my routine would slip as I would get home from work, think ive got loads of time before dark, sit down and put off going out to see the boys. In summer I was glad to ride later because of flies and heat.
Winter though still had to be mostly 6am to squeeze in a ride. Some days I was working part time then as well so if the girls could come after school we would do a quick ride before dark.

With my current set up I have really minimised daily chores, I have enough grazing to rest and rotate so I only poo pick the high traffic areas and my muck heap is a pile in a bush so no need to make it pretty. I sweep the barn and shelter mats a couple of times a week but other than that there’s no mucking out.

Maintenance is the thing I put off, a fence post to replace, a tree to chop, stuff like that, and there’s always something waiting to be done here this time of year.

And filling hay nets, that’s my least favourite job!

I also hate filling haynets!!! I end up wearing more than goes in the nets and how much ends up on the bathroom floor when i get changed could feed a horse for a week it seems. Hate it!!!

I really like sweeping. Nothing like the satisfaction of a tidy yard.

I found a great solution to getting covered in hay or it filling my boots. I use an old pair of thin waterproof trousers (no longer waterproof) but nothing sticks to them. Socks are hay free.

I think some of my issue is having to tidy up behind inconsistent people!

Someone has used the gateway to do a U turn at the junction. It's covered the gully in mud that the water from the Spring runs down and it then comes into the field. I spent three months clearing the hedge and sorting drainage from when it rains so the over flow can flow off.
I am going to have to fence it off again, then move it when I want to go out and hope nobody turns round while I am out!!

My wellies and even jodh boots end up full of straw. I could make a bed out of them when I take them off and give 'em a shake out!

I have discovered welly bobs. Love them. I think you can buy those toppers? But an over reach boot will do the same job.
LOL welly bobs would make me feel like a garden gnome with my short legs! Hahahaa, sorry. I couldn't be bothered with the topper things. I have to be easy on and off quickly.

I used to wear leg warmers and cold that over. So they even still make those. It's possibly moved onto thick fleece tights or stuff now.

Lol legwarmers! Hahahaha, those bring back my teenage year memories at school. LOL. We used to wrinkle our over the knee socks up to make them look more like legwarmers. We used to get told off by the teachers though. Hahahaa. Happy days...........

Aw that's a shame when you went to so much bother looking after it and sorting.

The over the knee one was a rubbish idea, they never stayed up.

Ah legwarmers. Want do you know I have 3 pairs all different sizes. Weirdly all came from different sources at various times and all a very dark red colour. Think that was the colour back in them days. I still wear them. Again stops stones flicking up and going in my trainers or boots when I walk the dog. Not good for hay though. Gosh I've had them many many years, one pair when I was a child.
