What would you do for a horse bite

The horse I rode yesterday nipped me while I was leading him to the mounting block. I didn't even realize it had happened until later. It is a very small bite but did break the skin.
I was searching online to see if I should get a tetanus shot. Some disturbing information about rabies also turned up.
If there are any New Yorkers out there, do you know if the rabies vaccine is required for horses in New York State?
I'm probably overreacting and the horse was fine but you never know. Thanks.

they don't usually get it but i think that any animal or human can have it without actively showing signs

I got bit by a lesson horse right under the arm this summer. Didn't realize it was bleeding until after my ride! I pretty much just wiped it with a antibacterial wipe at the barn, and then when i got home I gently cleaned it with soap and water. Then I covered it with a thin piece of gauze for about 2 days, until there was a nice scab. Then eventually the scab came loose. I still have a mark where it happened

We go through phases when I get bitten daily and then not for months, never bother to do anything about it because he gets a tetanus shot every 2 yrs and I had one for a dog bite a few years ago.

I done know your rabies rules in NY. Just phone your doctor and ask. I think they will suggest a Tetanus every 10 yrs. You would definately have symptoms within 24 hrs if you had rabies.

One thing working with nags and horses you should keep up to date is tetanus, in the old days they used to whack on into you every time you went to hospital with a cut, now they are a bit more cautious due to sensetising folk to the vaccine. If you got your childhood shots as a baby then a booster one every ten years seems to be the norm now. But it;s really worth keeping a record in case you get a really grubby injury.

As for rabies, havn't a clue what they recommend

Not even that nowadays. Had to really push to get mine updated as the doctor didn't want to do it. It wasn't even clear from my records that I had had the initial course as a child.
She said re horse riding "It's not like you put your hands in the dirt".
Think she had an idea of riders sitting on a horse looking pretty without any idea of what looking after a horse entails.
