Never actually owned a mare before, have loaned, shared and ridden mares but not owned one.
So my question is when do mares come into season and how long for and what are the symptoms except for them leaving there mark everywhere.

Would appreciate as much info as possible as I have my new mare :) shes a darling but stubborn!!

Thanks

they come into season every three weeks (or, that is what their cycle should be ;)) and its only a few days.
Some mares show more than others. the biggest tell tale is usually when grooming - they usually lift their tail when you're brushing round their back end. they may be more tetchy and may be more flurtatious. if they are in with geldings, the geldings can get more cheeky (but that depends on both the gelding and the mare). i've not known many mares to actually "squirt", my mare never used to but since new horses have been around she's been a bit mental (still easy to handle etc but a definate change in her cycle)

My mare is in season now also if you slightly open her bits they are usually a redish pink when in season, my mare is such a tart she squirts, squals and wees everywhere!

yep - cycle is normally 21 days, season lasts 3-5 or thereabouts.

you may notice nothing at all. you might notice tenderness around the flanks and belly, tickliness or soreness being groomed, different to ride (some go best in season, some are awful), bad temper, any of the ususal PMT symptoms. she may wink and squirt urine or sticky goo, her back end may get messy and sore. we have one who is a bit like a tap, and she gets very sore and 'crusty' (sorry) round her bits and between her hind legs, we have to sudocrem her regularly and wash her daily.

My mare does the occasional wink at you and is more switched on to your moods when she is in season but other than that, nothing.

My mare squirts, 'winks', lifts her tail up a lot, flirts appalling with anything male and loses all concentration. She's super affectionate, a bonus, as she's not normally but needs lots of reminders when being ridden if there are boys around. It's great to get her to stretch as she'll contort around like a mad thing to stare at the boys!

my mare is/was downright horrendous! she squirts so much she makes a mess down her hindlegs that needs frequent washing, she backs up to things and 'presents' including trees, geldings etc she calls constantly on hacks and thinks the lovely reflection in the co-op window is a really good looking other pony.

:o:o:o

saying that she hasn't been in season since january, she came back off loan on february and hasn't had one since:confused::confused: assuming its a winter break?

My mare is a lady. She doesn't do boys! No winking or squirting and if she thinks a boy is too near her back end in the school, she comes over all indignant with her ears back. Quite right too I say ;)

sounds familiar!!!:D

Thanks everyone that has really helped!!!

I think she is in season as since I have moved her (sunday) she has been flirting with the next door gelding, and I caught her peeing right next to him.
Also she is quite sensitive at the moment and has

tenderness around the flanks and belly

which she didnt for the past month.

I will check her bottom tomorrow just incase she needs washing.
She also liked showing off in front of the other horses today when I was bringing her back from her walk.

So will she be in and out of season for the next couple of months do you think?

Thanks

she'll be on a 3week cycle - for the rest of her life i believe. i've never had a mare that has stopped coming in season for any reason (including the seasons - no pun!)
the peeing is to do with hormones i think... moving mares often puts them in season

yep, it's normally very diminished if not stops altogether over winter, although a lot of our school ponies who had previously not cycled over winter, did start to when we had a stallion on the yard all year round. the first season of spring is often a bit of a monster, many mares are appalling for that one and the much better afterwards.

Great thanks, I am sure there are going to be a lot of stroppy mare moment over the next couple of months for both me and her lol.

Anyway just to let you know I have seen an improvement in her the past two days :)
Shes more trusting in me, than she was before at her old home.
