Hi all - we are just about to submit plans for planning application for 2 stables (11x11) and just wondered what is the best concrete block to use for stabling.

Obviously it needs to be strong. If anyone has made a stable from brezzeblocks before, could you please recommend which ones you have used.

Will be for 2 16hh TBs.

Thanks all.

Concrete blocks - lightweight would be fine (3.5 newton), but if you wanted something more substantial then 7 newtons which is heavyweight.

I would use lightweight (assuming single storey , not with hay storage) and clad in timber weatherboarding. Planner tend to prefer the look of timber cladding - more traditional appearance.

Agree with Clava 100% here. Have just asked a contractor for his opinion too, 3.5 newton lightweight blockwork will be okay providing you are only proposing a single story stable building, if you are going for 2 storey or hay store above then you will need the heavyweight blocks, but if you really want it more substantial then 7 newton blockwork.

You will need to clad the stables purely for aesthetic reasons. Planners are more likely to process your application quickly and without any appeals if you clad in timber weather boarding. What roofing materials are you going for may I ask?

If you need any help please email me, alisonmhairi@gmail.com I'm an architect and spend a huuuge amount of time submitting p.apps!

Ace87 - are you actually qualified as I thought you were only 23 or so?, please forgive me if you are older and qualified but it is a legal thing and I'd hate you to be prosecuted.

Its not just the weight of the blocks but the actual size.

I have seen stable partitions built in 4" or whatever the metric equivalent is. Even with padding a few good kicks and they can crack or even fall over.

Some people use 6" but to be honest I always use 9" hollow blocks, they are much less likely to move.

Sorry for the measurements, I used to work for a company that made blocks but they didn;t do metric (yes I am that old)

To partition my stables, we used "hollow" blocks measuring 19x19x39cms, the walls of the blocks themselves are 2cms thick (solid filled blocks used on the top row for fixing grills). :)

We've used the hollow blocks for the outside walls and the ordinary blocks for the internal walls plus to give a base for the roof, all placed on a concrete base.
