Why is a hack

There is also a showing class called Hack!

E.g. Riding club horse/pony
Show hunter
Hack

i never called it a hack before coming on here tbh, just going out for a ride or having a ride (considering i never really schooled before coming on here either :o)

like you get hacking jackets aswell (tweed basically)

agree with titch on this one

Whys a pony called a pony?
Whys a ride called a ride?
Whys a computer called a computer?
Whys a table called a table?

Yes i go on hacks - consider myself a happy hacker:):)
Just to confuse the issue quite often go on a `hack and a yack`
(ie roughly translated as a ride with a mate, and a good old chin wag:):)

After a quick google....
It derives from the Norman French "HAQUENAI" which was a word used in medieval times to describe a horse of poor or indifferent quality which could be hired very cheaply.

Oh dear, my nice ISH will be most put off by this description:D:D
How interesting:):)
Thank you

The show idea comes form the old days when people would have a horse they rode to the meet on, the covert hack, basically the same as todays Show Riding Horses. The smart young men who rode in Hyde Park would have a 'park hack', todays Show Hack.

Hacks were smart, hunters did their job, the local vicar/doctor etc probably had a workman like cob and the tradesman a pony who would pull a cart or be ridden.

Haquenée???? There is a word in French from which the word hackney is derived, eml, help me out with this one, is it pronounced hack-ee -nay?

I wonder whether the work Hack has been taken from the word Hackney, taken from the french word. I did know what the french word meant too, but I have forgotten!
