Will a breastplate stop a saddle slipping round?

My horse is like a barrel and although his saddle fits, it slides around a bit.

What will help stop this, if anything?? thanks:)

no, a breastplate stops a saddle slipping backwards.

cropper from slipping forwards.

an anti slip numnah may help as well as girthing up correctly.

the barnsby pad although expensive has proved very effective at my yard

a tip from a saddler that helps is to use the front two straps one side and rear two straps on the opposite side, this applies a twisting pressure that helps stop the saddle moving whilst still evenly applying pressure over the back.

Goldfish I have the exact same problem as you...but my saddle slips fowards too...

Havent found a solution yet either, ive tried different girths/saddles/pads etc...

Im very tempted to buy a crupper...I just worry it will hurt or rub the underneath on his tal...

a correctly fitted cropper wont rub, use a nice rubber one if worried.

Or wrap sheepsking around the crupper? Used to work on the nether regions of a rather sensistive skinned driving mare we had?

It was my mum who told me to get a breastplate to stop the sliding, I thought I was going mad, I just couldn't see how it would work!

He has a thorowgood saddle and it has 4 girth straps, do you think using the first and 4th would do any good?

Thanks for the tip Ceiron, I will try :)

I guess I should probably work on improving my stability and balance

Actually, the thorowgoods with 4 straps are designed so you use the 2nd and 3rd straps. The first and 4th are point and balance straps which you can use to help with stability issues:D

problem might be related to the type of girth that you use ?
A saddler recently told me not to use elasticated girths with elastic that was too "supple" on rounder horses as it could lead to saddle slipping about

My saddle slips (or used to) -- I fractured my spine when it slipped and I fell off

I use the Kolibri 5 point breast girth/plate thingie -- I believe it helps stop my saddle slipping back or sideways -- half the battle confidence wise if you believe in something :)-- I now only use this on my wobbly days

I also use the Barnsby non slip grip pad ALL the time

I have used 2 types of girth with great success

The Barnsby comfort girth - in dressage length (sometimes known as 'le trixerant') I sold that on as it was getting a bit small - or Ted was getting a bit big

I now use one that has a neoprene backing which was way cheaper-can't remember the brand but was about 30 quid -- something like this

I know that my fellow liveries think I'm bonkers -- but they haven't fractured their spines -- and anything that helps my confidence is ok by me

So -- try a breastplate on with your saddle and see what you think, maybe you can borrow one ?

Also maybe try Ebay for the non slip grip pad -- they're expensive but I wouldn't use any other now -- and I've had mine over 2 years and it's been washed loads of times and it's like new
