Just wondering how you all got on with it and how far in advance you all gave it. Can you give and turn out for a few hours for example to allow to take affect?

I usually give it at least a couple of hours before I need it to kick in. If it’s something that’s really time-sensitive, I try to plan even earlier.

If it's going to work it'll be within 30 to 40 minutes, so you cetainly don't want to give it hours before because it will have worn off by the time you want it. I found Domesedan more effective.

With Sedalin and Domesedan how you give it is important. Do not give it like a wormer, it needs to be absorbed via mucous membranes not put down the throat. I always found it easier to put on a couple of pairs of latex gloves, measure the dose onto a finger and then smear it around lips and gums rather than try to administer a syringe under the tongue as advised, but Ale may be more co-operative than mine were. Once they've been dosed keep them somewhere quiet so they are calm, it won't work as well on an already agitated horse as they can fight the effect.

I’ve generally found, if it’s going to work, it does in about 45 minutes. You def need to give it before they get wound up and leave them quiet for it to work.

Thanks everyone, we use injectable ACP at work and it rarely does much to most of the patients. We tend to inject that subcut and leave for 45 mins so I wondered if orally needed to wait longer. I was looking to try it in a small feed but actually that's a good suggestion to give it with gloves on into mucous membrane @carthorse so thank you I'll give that a try. Will see how we get on.

I used Sedalin for years and years with Chloe, worked well. She had such bad feather mites and mud fever scabs vet let me have some as it was only way I could get near her to do them without getting kicked or stamped on. One time I used Domesedan, wow, now that really knocked her out. Was good, really good, and I would use again (with caution) because she was rather wobbly and we did her in our garage lol so I was glad when she "came round" and it wore off somewhat. From memory, I would administer the Sedalin about half an hour to an hour before proceeding. I think it was closer to an hour to make her dopey now I remember. I guess its different for every horse though?

I think often when problems arise with Sedalin and Domesedan it hasn't been given properly or hasn't been given time to kick in. I've seen people give it like a wormer far too many times, I've even seen someone give it then go for "a quick ride before she gets sleepy" then wonder why it wasn't working when the farrier arrived!!!

I used it on Jack, every other day for a fortnight when he had an auto-immune disorder and needed sheath cleaning regularly. He lived out throughout and never had any issues. It took effect after about 30 minutes.

Thank you everyone for your replies I did read them at the time but then forgot to reply! The fireworks were last night and I'm actually really pleased with how the sedalin worked for Ale. I only managed to get 1ml in his mouth as he then panicked bless him about me touching his mouth so I put the remaining 3ml in a feed. I didn't hold out that much hope as he was already a bit stressed (thousands of people walk and drive by the yard this one night of the year)

But within 40mins he was just chilling ears flicking back and forth constantly. After an hour and a half he was having a snooze with his head on the door, completely ignored the kids low noise display, which is not low noise really.

Then came the main display, he did really well mainly just standing listening anxiously. Just near the end he started pacing but nothing like last year where he ran about in the stable and sweated up. He did do 10 poos within the 2 hours though.

This video is right near the end and just shows the noise we have to put up with 😞 feel for the RDA who are right next door!

I'm so glad it helped. and it''s reassuring for you knowing that you now have something that will take the edge off in this sort of situation. Thanks for the update.

Gosh, that WAS noisy. Glad it helped. To be fair, it would have probs been wearing off after a couple of hours too.
