2019 Hacking/Riding Thread

Well, what a ride tonight! I've been trying really hard to improve my mind set and get on board in a positive way. As mentioned earlier, I have been working on the basics again. Anyway, fast forward this is our fifth in a row ride. Well, about ten seconds in and a pheasant spooked him - flapped it's way out of the bushes down the long side  Mr T was helping me with some pointers and said it looked quite a big spook lol but I stayed on and Zi was so good, calmed right down very very quickly. Think it's safe to say my faith is restored:) so after that we carried on and had a really productive session. And he got extra polos.

We had a fun weekend. Saturday was very hot so just a nice walk round the block on our own. I also met my poorly friend to discuss the ongoing care of her three (she won't be able to look after them for at least 6 months I think)

On Saturday night YO had a patio warming BBQ so 10 of us spent the evening with horsey chat (of course)

Sunday was a little cooler. YO wants to start hacking further to give her horse more stamina so we had a nice 95 minute trip around (well I thought so - she said I had nearly killed her :) )

Joey was keen to help with the poo picking. After inspecting the scoop he then dropped a pile in front of me!

I also had help cleaning out the feed buckets

Just rewards for the hardest working working groom on the yard (well ok I was the only groom on the yard!)

Ugh I'm so far behind I was not getting new updates
It has been a nasty hot July third hottest on record.
I have been trying to do a little bit of play and legging him up walking really early on the road
after I feed him. Then get him in the rd pen til the sun comes around.
Been doing a little bit of play and trying to get out later in evening but oh I SOOOOOOOOOO
WANT FALL...
I did get my patterns for the challenge to compete by video and did set them up.
It was a big learning experience I did set some stuff up too crowded and WE ARE NOT
REALLY used to trying to video and sigh have it TOTALLY STOP and re start as a new video.

Ive only ridden 3 times in the last few months.
I really need to get working on that....
BUT first evening ride went ok I just kind of played a bit with the patterns a little
it was still kind of hot but UNEVENTUFULL..
Second ride couple nites later I come around large bush a family of turkeys jumped in or jumped out just the other side hes not spooky but he made 4 gigantic leaps to the righto_Oo_O:eek::eek:.
Thankfully I was still on at the end of that :p
but it did take a few minuters to put my heard out of my throat back in my chest.

The rest of the ride was uneventful thannk god...
And I did a little more playing a bit with the patterns.
Due to the heat the dealine to get video in was extended.

Toni and I played near the deadline.
She and levi had gotten stung in the barn then she got stung near the arena over there.
So she did not end up getting on.

I was going to try to get a video.
It started well over tarp ploles etc then around to the trash can hve to hit a ball into ..
I had forgotten to take the ball out....
So we had to start again...
That one was not as good as the other one had been going:rolleyes: but...
I got it completed..;)

I start to do it again get around to over the poles and he gets STUNG buy someting and turns into A RODEO HORSE...:eek::eek:o_Oo_Oo_O:mad::mad::mad:

Thankfully I stayed on ;) it was on the video cause it was in the middle of
the pattern but that was the end of my riding for the eveining..

I went as far as the mounting block and my legs felt like spagetti..

It turned out the video only paused not toatlly reset so the only complete one was in hte middle.
It was too big to send so I brought my phone down to her to view and judge the one pattern i did complete...
I never got the other patterns videoed.

Its a totally new learning experience with video and rome wasn't built in a day...

I had fun and learned a lot and there is another series in September and the weather should be better... and I make sure each video attempt does become its own separate thing.

Woo hoo I guess I got a 5th ( and there were more than 5):p:)

Yaye go me!
Another success tonight. It's quite breezy but sunny - we had a haa coming in, which can make everyone a bit spooky (really odd sensation riding in bright sunlight but seeing it creep over us). He was ace - and we did loads of transitions and shapes. My legs aren't half feeling it though! Instead of sitting and being the ultimate in horse passengers I feel like I've connected with him and we're actually listening to each other and achieving something.:D

Rode him again last night, and we just about escaped the fog! I don't think he would have worried too much, but all the same I was glad it set in properly when we'd finished. We tried (emphasis on try part lol) to do some serpentines etc and it went really well. I actually stopped worrying and enjoyed the view as well.
Here he is, enjoyed a mid morning snooze before being worked later on..............(using that term very loosely too, work?!!!)

Good to hear from you again! Great pics and well done for your 5th. Like you, am looking forward to autumn - sick of flies and feeling sticky all the time.

Chilled boy! Glad things are falling into place - funny, isn't it, how one bad ride puts us off getting out, but then a couple of good ones and we feel we could go every single chance we get!

Out on Monday for a very short one. It was pouring first thing, so I went back at about 2, got all ready, set off about 2.30. I realised halfway down the lane that crazy lady was out, (she had parked behind the bushes, so didn't see her car!). Anyway, decided to chance it, but spent the whole ride looking out for her, so wasn't much fun! Went out early today, and really enjoyed it. To an onlooker, I'm sure we look pathetic, plodding along, not doing much of anything. However, I'm very aware that Hogan has begun to listen (reluctantly), and where we would have had bunny hops and mini bucks, now he just slows a bit, and then says "ALRIGHT ALRIGHT! I'm going, I'll do it." It's tiring, and I have to work every minute we're out, but we now trot almost the whole ride, off and on, all over the inclosure, and outside, and he'll keep going past the turn for home, something even Ramsey would object to! Now I have to face my fear and try a canter! I think I'll get someone to walk with me first time I try for it. He got a carrot when we got back, and looked very puzzled - doesn't usually get treats. This is his suspicious face....Screenshot_20190808-104748_Gallery.jpg

I managed a short one last night, it was nice - no flies again! I didn't do much but feel like I'm getting somewhere. However, I don't think I'll be doing much this week coming - we have a lot going on (and none of it good:() so I don't think I'd be able to concentrate properly. When there are things worrying me or a lot going on, it really does affect my riding. I don't want to spoil a good thing.
But of course I'll be keeping an eye on this thread..........................:D

Like you, Trewsers, I have a busy week - granny duty for 4 days straight. My only free day is Monday, and unless I go out late afternoon on Thursday, (which I don't really like - mornings somehow always feel better) Monday will be my only ride. Went out this morning, later than I'd intended, as it was pouring down at 7.30, and so glad I did - again a super boy. His biggest vice is trying to eat ANYTHING he can get to - bracken, overhanging branches, brambles - I'm surprised he hasn't eaten me. Getting a handle on it, but I have to be alert every step of the hack. He does have the loveliest trot, which, once I don't have to keep after him, to keep him going, I shall really enjoy. I read this over, and think people must wonder what I see in him! It's a bit like having a youngster, where every little achievement feels like a victory! We came past 2 riders on the way home, and he didn't hesitate - 6 months ago I'd have had to get off to get home. Tiny achievements, but such a good feeling. We're off on holiday for a week, early September, and I'm really going to miss him!

Aw yes, I used to miss mine when we used to go away. We went away for our wedding anniversary - I'd only had Storm a few months but I missed her so much!!!

woo hoo the weaher is breaking a little more
I had a SWEATSHIRT on at dawn this am YEA :p :p

He blew it out a little in the rope round pen the humidity was not bad it was getting mostly shady in there and it was not blairing hot.
I used a flag for the first time and he was very responsive .
9946299461

We rode in the eveining low key over a few obstacles NO RODEO HORSE
that was really really good I could not have taken a third hit in a row to my confidence.

99466994659946499463

I have started to do play in the big rd pen before I take him back out the last couple days.
That has worked out well.
I like using the flag a lot.
Hes blown it out a couple days now and this am I got really nice consistent trot.
Depending on the heat and humididy ill try to do more of that in the afternoon too
when the rope rd pen starts to get shady.9946899467

It was very VERY WINDY yesterday and after some play I let him out loose. I had the most interesting time just sitting and watching him. It really reinforced that riding when its really windy is MY PROBLEM...99469
He was totally unconcerned

You both look good together - and yes, I understand the windy riding problem too! Lovely looking setup as always.

(for Horse and Goat mom) Kit Maynard whose book I just read wouldnt view it as a problem. He points out that few of us just spend time with out horses without asking them to do anything for us. I deliberately waited in Nell's box doing nothing last week and it worked great - relaxed and she was so chilled out on our hack.

By the way, I am now sharing on a yard with younger people - but they dont take the horses out in a wind - and wont let me. Contrast to my previous RS where we went out in all weathers because they didnt want to refund people's money.

I got a bit of a fear of it years ago
At a long lining clinic...
2 girls from the facility where the clinic I was watching went riding off down the road into the woods. Someone did mention to them how windy it was.
Ohhhhh no problem....

About 20 minutes later both horses came back at a gallop riderless..

The clinic halted and people headed towards the woods.
They were walking back a huge branch let go came crashing down both horses spooked badly and both riders came off.
They were young and unhurt ... at that age you bend and bounce.

It akways set in my mind you can't predict that. And the most NON SPOOKY horse will react.
They were lucky the branch did not fall on them.
