Same with Hogan - he's not rugged most of the time, so out we go. Doesn't seem to bother himI'm afraid if P's wet he gets ridden anyway! It's un-British & I have plenty of friends that won't ride a wet horse (and are mildly horrified I do) but if I didn't ride when it was raining and he was wet he'd have been almost retired the last 10 years![]()
We have had rides like that. We're doomed. Lovely morning, nice, calm Hogan, and off we go. Going down the back track we came across some ponies, and somewhere in the distance a pony yelling for her friends. Hogan got a bit jittery, but not too bad. Then one of the ponies spooked at us, and shot off full pelt - he got a bit more jittery, but manageable - just. Got to the gate into the forest, got through, and proceeded up the track, at which point 4 or more ponies came haring down the track behind us, and past our back, like the hounds of hell were after them. Hogan nearly fainted, then began throwing himself about. I decided discretion was the better part of valour, rode (kind of) 50 ft up the track, and turned for home. He pranced very prettily the whole way home, and probably exercised himself more than if we'd had a proper hack. I'm not sorry that we gave up - I could still hear that wretched pony yelling while I poo picked.
I think that pony yelling would upset the sanest of horses wouldn't it. I would have given up too! We're doomed. Lovely morning, nice, calm Hogan, and off we go. Sending chin up vibes. I think there's more than one thing going on here. Unknowingly you are grieving and giving off vibes I'll put money on it - Hogan is picking up something - and that combined with crap weather / cold weather I think is adding up to some rocky rides. Give yourself some time off. I know it's frustrating, but for me personally, if there's too much going on in life (and not that much of it good) I used to leave off the riding. But of course I do know Hogan has always had his regular ups and downs.................I just feel defeated today. Went out and all was OK, then met some dog walkers, who did nothing to spark the absolute sh*t show that followed. I stayed on for another 5 minutes, hoping he'd settle, but he felt like he was going to bolt and I don't feel like hitting the deck at full tilt. Even leading he was a total jerk. What's worse I lost my temper at one point (he was trying to barge me off the track) and gave him a hell of a whack across the chest. Just fed up. I'll take him out again, but these smells usually last about 2 weeks, so hopefully he'll settle in a week or so.![]()
