e&l insurance

oh good, karen/lady! your unicorn story made me chuckle! i insure through e & l too, but have yet to have the misfortune of ever needing my insurance, however should mine start having unicorn formations, least i'll know i'm covered for that!

Try BEIB - I agree the NFU quote looks a bit steep - that is more than Tavia's and she is insured for a good sum with £2000 tack cover and £6500 vets fees. I don't have loss of use on - that really whacks up the premium.

one of my horses is currently insured with E&L but as soon as it expires i will move to the same company as my other horse who is with H&R, they only have a £70 excess on everything and they were cheaper than E&L!!
i have heard so many horrific stories about E&L that i'll never insure with them again.

That NFU quote does sound quite a lot. I pay less than £300 a year and Arnie is insured for pretty much everything except loss of use. Did you have loss of use included and if so, do you really need it? As was said above, it is the one thing that really makes a difference to quotes so it might be worth getting a quote without it.

Not sure now they are sending me the details in post, ive got a quote from seib £313 thats without loss of use.Havnt put tack on it either as i keep it in my garage at home. How much do you think i should insure for vet bills i went for £1500.

I've used Carriage House and have currently been with Scottish Equestrian for the last few years. Although I never had to make a claim (touch wood) they have been helpfull with queries.

re. how much vets fees to go for my reasoning was this. I didn't like the cost of the premium with loss of use added on especially since it was cheaper to go for £5000 vets fees instead (SEIB). I thought that if something really bad happened that might warrant a loss of use because I couldn't afford to pay the difference (eg if treatment that may or may not work was £3000 and I was insured for £1500 and couldn't afford the £1500 difference) so claimed for loss of use instead then at least if I'd been sufficiently covered for the best possible treatment then at least I'd known he'd had the best treatment before the loss of use option.

Actually not sure if that makes sense or is in fact logical at all (it is in my head!) I think in short I mean, that I could do my absolute best for him treatment wise (and hope it worked) before having to claim for loss of use and always wondering whether if I could have afforded the difference he would have got better.

Just a thought on £1500. The treatment mine is having currently that I'm claiming for involves heartbar shoes for the front feet - at £120/pair every 4 weeks!! SEIB will pay for treatment for 1 year which if he has to have heartbars for this long will amount to £1560 - and that's without x-rays, blocks, consultation etc!!

Its really hard since obviously you never know what's going to go wrong. Just wanted to provide some food for thought beyond the cost of cuts and bruises.

Incidentally, I pay monthly which doesn't seem quite so daunting as a lump sum!

GOOD GOD!!! you pay a fortune!
my policy is about £156, that is with vets fees amounting to £4000 on any one incident and the excess i would have to pay is £70.
Thats what i thought as i only use my horse for hacking nothing else.Im wondering if they base the cost on your postcode like car insurance.

i have never made a claim from them and touch wood i won't have to, i don't think they do it by postcode.
here's their number Horse and Rider Insurance Direct 01926 452626 and their based in Warwickshire

Horse & Rider, Have just given me the cheapest quote by far,

Out of NFU, Carriage house, stoneways, Kibis

with more things coverd on the policy and a cheaper vets fee excess.

Thanks for putting the number up Jessie123

E&L

Hi!

I had my first horse, a cob, insured with E&L and when a little bump started to grow near her eye she was admitted to our local vets who said it was a sarcoid it was promptly removed and the vets bill came to about £500 and lets just say we waited a long, long time and our insurance got bumped right up.
I changed to NFU through a friends recommendation and when my TB had really bad problems with his feet and colic the vet bill was over £2000 and i had only been with them for a few months but the claim was sorted within a month.I couldn't speak more highly of them.My insurance has gone up but it still isn't extortionate. He is ecluded from any more problems with his feet directly or indirectly for the life of the policy but the colic exclusion is being renewed after 6 months.Great Stuff!!! ;)
