Introductions here please!

Hi my name is vicki. I am 55 years old and think I was born a pony, I have been very privileged throughout this time with many horses and ponies. I seemed to get a passion for Arabs. My last horse being suki who I sold in September of this year when I was diagnoised with stage 3 breast cancer and non hodgkins lymphoma. I decided with 7 weeks to go of chemotherapy it was time to get me a gift something to get me up. I can't handle Arabs now and their quicks so I am in the process of buying a 3 year old filly

Hey, my name is Sean from Scarborough. I have never ridden a horse before but I sometimes wonder about taking up riding. I nearly signed up for lessons when I was at university but I changed my mind at the last minute, and I often wonder if I made the right decision or not.

I'm just joining for some general advice and queries. It would also be nice to maybe get chatting to a few of you. Don't know if there's anyone else in Scarborough on here, but if not, you should definitely visit us because we're a beautiful town in Yorkshire.

Welcome to NR 👋 I agree you live in a fabulous place, I spent many great holidays there as a kid. I’m hoping to bring my horse up there for a holiday next year, there’s a place just outside robins hood bay I hope to stay at 🤞 there’s brilliant riding all around that area.

Very nice. Robin Hood's Bay is great. I imagine North Yorkshire in general must be a brilliant place for people riding horses, as we have a lot of beautiful landscapes with wide open fields.

Wide open spaces are the best, the moors are always a pleasure to ride, there’s nothing like enjoying beautiful scenery from the back of a horse!

Are the moors your favourite place to ride then, would you say?
Any place is my favourite place to ride 😉 I live in a very flat huge forest, amazing to ride in, a magical place filled with wildlife, great going and miles upon miles to explore, but not many views. Every different place brings something new to the experience and I have chronic wanderlust!

That forest ride you're describing sounds like something out of a fairytale.

Hello!
Just joined this forum!

I’m an adult beginner having my first lesson next weekend at the age of 25!

I rode on and off as a child but it’s been so long this is basically all new to me! Any tips appreciated!

Lots of us here were in the same position. And you will find that it is not All new. Balance, and softness on the horse and keeping your feet in the stirrups will all be same as when you were a child. Above all that you liked the feel of riding on a horse. Some people just dont.

I will add another note as I came to NR after having a hard time with an unpleasant teacher. She herself had been injured out hacking and maybe she wanted to spare me the same.
Every stage of riding requires the right teacher and the right horse, so dont be afraid to graduate from one school to another or to find another teacher, if you dont feel happy in lessons.

Hi! I hope you enjoy your first lesson. As someone who had done some riding as a child/teen before having proper lessons as an adult, my top tip would be to remind yourself what you loved about it before and what’s brought you back and to be patient with yourself. Especially if you’re struggling with something. Some would probably say I talk to the horse or pony I’m riding too much but just being so close to, getting to fuss over and talk to such wonderful animals are some of the things I personally love most about riding.

My other tip would be to go into your first lesson with an open mind and just see what happens, but as you gain experience and confidence again, make you start expressing your feelings and goals. Make sure your coach/instructor understands what you want to achieve and what you most and least enjoy. Of course, this doesn’t mean there won’t be some things you’ll enjoy more and others you’ll enjoy less on your riding journey to get to where you want to be, but make sure you ultimately feel you are progressing towards your goals. I hope that helps (and makes sense)!

Hi everyone, I live in Australia and have worked with horses since I was 12 mucking out boxes before and after school. By the time I was 14, it was suggested I lie about my age so I could ride trackwork and take horse to the races. After I finished school, I moved to Sydney and rode work for 15 years with Australia's leading trainers. I've worked on horse studs and broken in, many horses. (I use a no buck method) And managed pertaining an breaking farms. My beautiful wife has done years of foaling night watch at Australia's largest studs ( her record is 7 foals in one night). We are both getting on 63 and 58 but still provide adgistment and spelling and foal outside mares here at home, we did 13 last year and 1 so far this year but we have a mate here now who is 2 weeks over due and will probably go tonight. You can see some videos of new born foals on Instagram here https://www.instagram.com/pete_and_the_ponies27?igsh=ajZocWJ3ZWk0YXRq

Hi! I'm Phil, I'm in my early-mid forties and (after many years of daydreaming about the idea but feeling self-conscious) finally decided to take up horse riding! I had my first lessons last week and again today and have absolutely loved it more than I imagined! I don't know if I can say 'I'm a horse rider' yet (or how many lessons guantify that?) Buy I have 3 more booked and have bought some gear (jods, boots and hat) so I guess maybe? Anyway, really happy to start my new adventure in the saddle (I've just finished playing football, so timing is good as I need a new keep-fit activity)

That’s great to hear, Phil! 😀Enjoy the start of your horse and riding journey! There are people at all stages of that journey here, including very experienced people who are lovely and always extremely helpful if you have questions. They’ve helped me a lot.

Welcome - good to have another male rider. I started riding a little later than you, and 2 years after my first lesson bought my own horse

Oh haaaaiii - OLD memeber returning having been a very active participant back in 2004-2010ish! I was in my early teens when I first signed up to NR. I used to own a pony called Stumpy a long time ago and she went to live with another NR favourite back in the day - whataneejit - until she died.

I've dusted off my NR membership after years out of the saddle as I'm itching to get back into it! I'm now 36 and a mum of two who's not ridden for absolutely AGES! Hopefully I'll get back on board sooner rather than later!

Hello! I remember you - what a long time ago that was. I loved the name of your pony "Stumpy". Hope you stick around :D
