Keeping A Horse Stabled Is Unfair Or Is It?

We generally get strong winds on and off all winter, generally a force 10-11 is commonplace, but once or twice a year we get utter rip snorters like the Xmas day one that was 150mph winds. Most folk have block/stone built barns with roofs tied down on every truss and purlin. Every tile on the roof of our house is nail and clipped.

Shetlands and Icelandics laugh in the face of it, and are often seen playing in it. Other breeds, need a stable and rugs and shelter. IF you want a big horse in Shetland, you need a stable, full stop. That's why we have Icelandics. They cope here very happily.

I have to admit I despair when I see horses kept in unsuitable conditions with the land overloaded with horses and unable to cope. That's common in my area which is why turnout is so limited in winter and bad weather.

I wish people would go by what the land available will cope with rather than trying to squeeze as many on as possible.
