can anyone please tell me a bit more about this company and what your experiences of dealing with them have been. Buying a horse today and have been recommended to insure with them.
thanks

Loki is insured by them and I have just claimed for about 4.5k and they have been great, if not a little slow to get the payment to me, but I was just very grateful they paid!

Hello,

I transferred to NFU last year (was with Pet Plan before - seemed very good, but very expensive!), and haven't had to claim as yet, but I found them very friendy and helpful when I was arranging my policy; I got through to a named person (rather than a call centre), who expained everything in detail, and sent me a couple of quotes that I could compare before making a final decision. They couldn't have been more helpful.

Also, if you end up taking out additional policies with them, you get some discount - I now have my car insurance through NFU too.

I am with NFU for horse, tack and trailer, I have had 2 claims, one for horse illness and one for a trashed saddle, NFU were great, the horse illness was quite serious and they were very understanding when I blubbered down the phone and sounded very hopeless, great on communication and I have been with them about 5 years now.
though I have heard that Pet Plan will cover for the whole time of an illness where as NFU will only cover for 12 months from the time the horse is ill? I havent looked into it that well as I am happy with NFU but I would consider changing due to that difference in clause if it were true?
:D
mine is about £35 a month for horse and trailer but I do need to increase Pickles value so it will go up, he is still insured for what I paid for him and he has been valued at a heck of a lot more now.

what ever you do dont go with E&L

I had my tack stolen almost two years ago, and they paid out the full amounts without any question really. To me it felt to take forever, but it was completed within the fortnight. The cost of our insurance hasn't gone up by much either.

Our insurance is going on for £400 per year or there abouts, especially as I need to increase the value of my tack yet again, and the value of the horse.

One thing they do offer (well two), is an equine rescue service. Doesn't matter where you are in the country or what's up, call them 24/7 and they'll find a way to sort you out. That can be finding a local vet, stabling or arranging transport home for the horse, as the majority of companies will not transport a trailer with a horse.

I changed to NFU after hearing horror stories about E&L. My friend also had problems with E&L paying a vet bill.

Everything was explained to me on the phone. Clearly and concisely. I am one of these people who makes sure I understand what my rights are and need them to cofirm it at least twice...:o

I pay £27 per month. Only on Captains purchase price of £850. I do have vet bills inc. But no tack or loss of use. I was advised that unless my horse is an eventer or serious competer then it was useless having loss of use as it is unlikely that a horse is not even capable of being a light hack.;) I will need to upgrade mine now as I feel that I should get my new saddle insured.

can't say enough good things about NFU, and no I don't get commision :)

I had a limit of £5000 vet fees per incident and they ended up paying £9000 or so due to misdiagnosis.

Cheap insurance is all very well, but if they don't pay up you might as well save your money.

Cheers, John.

They are excellent :) I have used then for 5 years and sadly have lots of claims for Vets fees and on one ocassion for a damaged rug under insured tack. They have always been helpful and prompt in settling claims. In addition to my horse, I have recently insured my horsebox and my car with them because the prices are good and I trust their service :)

How much you will pay will depend on the value you are insuring the horse, tack etc for. I have just had my renewal. Its £469. My mare is insured for £4000 and my tack is covered.

I too fully endorse NFU as equine insurers. Have been with them for a good few years and they have always been helpful and good payers. Even paid the difference between my regular farriery bill and the cost of the remedial shoing my mare had to have for 12 months and a year's supply of farrier's formula as recommended by my vet!

I used NFU too, found them great but insuring 2 horses was getting expensive so I've gone with KBIS instead.

I have an awful feeling about KBIS, can't put my finger on it, but am moving back to NFU when renewal date comes around.

The only problem with NFU is that you have to JOIN the NFU (can't remember, about £70 one off annual payment?) in order to take out any of its policies. Apart from that, great to deal with.

Pet Plan were also great; paid out £2,000 inc 'disposal' 10 days after I lost Riley - I was pregnant at the time and they rang me to make sure I'd got the cheque and I was OK. Very nice of them. I moved to NFU to cut costs, nothing to do with service.

I'm now REALLY worried about KBIS! Anyone else use them?

We've been with NFU for over 11 years. No gripes. Yes, my mum had to join the NFU but no bad thing, we get discounted tickets to the royal highland show coz she's an NFU member :D

Absolutely no quibles about their service or promptness at paying up. My only gripe is when we were debating the options about Bonnie, mum needed to speak to someone to see what (operation-wise) bonnie would be covered for. There was NOBODY to help :( so that has put me off them slightly. I'm seriously considering moving to SEIB who do have a 24 hour line, or one of the scottish insurance companies who also have an emergency line..

I've been with NFU for three years and pay around £300 per year for my mare. They're really good on communication and also are quite quick to pay out for claims. I've just claimed off them for a lameness case and they've paid pretty quickly. Unfortunately as tots n dots said they do have the 12month clause so my insurance on this lameness now runs out 30th May but to be fair all my vets bills have finished (touching wood) for this claim and it's just remedial farriery which i'll have to pay for myself.

Ahh ... But if a claim is ongoing, they continue to pay it into the following year and only stop paying out on a claim when you reach the £5000 per claim maximum :)

I have never heard of having to 'join NFU'. I never have!

The claim is ongoing and the only reason i said there will be no more vets bills is because NFU will not carry the claim through any further than the 30th May. It is an ongoing case of lameness, one that they have said they will not continue to pay out for hence why i'm not going down to newmarket with her as they won't cover it. I would imagine it is difficult for every horse and every case but the 12 month clause is definitely in action i can assure you.
