Bo cost about £380 to be pts by the vet and taken for cremation, the hunt wasn't an option as he'd been given lots of drugs for his hock and colic. I think the disposal alone was £240.

So the best part of £500 thereabouts ? :o :o :o But horses like that who have been treated with drugs there is no other option as they are not fit for dog food either

I'm up north so not the same but our hunt kennel kindly used their incinerator to dispose of a horse I lost and I payed them. He was not suitable for the hounds but the money I payed helped with other things in the hunt. It's not the norm but is always worth an ask. I payed them £250 and they collected locally.
Mystique went to pet crematorium and cost £750 6 years ago be over £1000 now I should think.

We are still allowed to bury on our own land.

Not allowed to bury here, I was happy to pay the kennels as it was used in other ways and it was kind of them as it's not something they offer.
Mystique gave me a lot and really helped me through a terrible time I couldn't bear not having her at home so pet crematorium was the only option and I'd pay double for her again but it certainly wasn't a cheap option. Though I have to say they were the most professional and respectful people I'd recommend to anyone. Our family have used them since for 2 dogs which was around the £300 Mark for our great dane.
It highlights though the cost of disposal and why alot of people couldn't afford it,this is where an abattoir to me is a much preferred option but the owners should do it themselves. Obviously in cases like Jessey and my horse at the hunt they can't be used due to medications.

Agree wholeheartedly with this. I took my gelding and stood with him. I owed him that much.

At the time we were grazing on land of special scientific interest and burial was out of the question. The other two I lost were buried on the field. One died overnight, the other by injection. However they go it's hard to cope with.

My feeling is not that they shouldn't be sold for meat but they should be treated humanly during the whole thing, from the initial sale, through journey and slaughter. And I just wish people would stop buying Welsh dross and breeding it.

That is not a trivial sum of money, and one I hope people take into consideration when buying a horse sized lump of meat.

£230 here for the knackered man to come bolt and take away.

I couldn't deal with having a box full of my old horse sitting on the mantelpiece :( especially not for £500

My parks are full of them.

Buried for me is different but to have w box full of ashes give me chills. I will have a nice chunk of his hair mounted with a collage of our best pictures and a bracelet made and that will be pride of place for me when he goes.

One yard I was at, had said for some on their long term liveries after the horse was PTS the digger "sometimes has work to do at night with no lights in the back field" this was offered to us for our old boy had he been PTS ar that yard but we moved on from there a few years before he was PTS. Vet euthanized him in the field and he was collected for £120 - no ashes back as both OH and I are fairly practical that way and not for £600 thanks !

All our animals have us there to the end, we owe them that much.
