We had a little spare room on the rescue van this morning and so have nine ex battery hens that were not pre booked.
They are safe here for a while if anyone would like to adopt some.

Aww I would if I was nearer! We have a score or so ex-bats who now live free range on the farm where my brother works. For anyone who's considering getting them if they've never had ex-bats, can I just say that they often come in awful shabby condition (though yours look rather healthy!) but with a little TLC they soon adjust to free range life and will provide lots of yummy eggs!

Those poor girls look a bit bewildered, though I'm not surprised with the change of scenery! I'm not only too far to have any, but our garden isn't suitable :( I hope there is a good home for them somewhere soon.

They are adorable poor wee things.

I would say to my dad but has has only just sold some of his bantams and they are breeding like wildfire at the moment.

I love to watch the progress of battery hens and how they recover.

I wish! Am still in dispute with neighbour - and he would just love me to do something silly like put a hen house up (you need planning permission where I live if its not in your back garden). I plan to get some at some point - near to the stables really as poss. Therefore not in our tiny backgarden. (I wouldn't want them near the neighbour anyway, in case he was mean to them). He would most likely complain about the noise they might make...........

trewsers go and get some hens now!!! your xmas present to yourself. as long as you have no cockerels can't see how they can complain.....

why on earth would you need planning permission to keep a few chooks?

Hens are theraputic, you NEED hens, they pop about the place, make themselves very useful, as DAT says, no cockerels, so no noise, just very entertaining and handy hens.

hens is agricultural, surely you don't need Planning for a little hen house? we don't. Tell your neighbour if they don't back off you'll have pigs and feed them at 5am every morning from a galvanised trough.......they'll soon back down :D :D :D

Wally i just don't know how you could have been so wicked as to suggest that to Trewsers. What are you thinking of.

I know when we lost all our hens to the fox a few years ago, the silence was deadly, you forget with hens there is a gentle chickeny burbling in the background all the time and when they aren't there it is quiet. Ok we have cockerels who have singing contests but even with just the girls, who are very therapeutic and useful, there is just this nice background noise they make.

were gonna have a hen house in the garden when we move, i can't wait :)

Although i have to clear all the brambles from the back so will prob be spring before it happens :(

Hope you find homes for them all

I am sorely tempted!!! lol. I know the neighbour hates chickens, it was one of the first things he told me when I moved there! He said he hates their smell!!!!!!!!! I wouldn't risk putting a dog kennel up - atm, he jumps on everything I do!!! I will definitely check with the planning dept - just not worth the risk and there is nothing he would like better than to watch me waste my money on a hen house only to have it pulled down!!!!!!

Wally - I love pigs!!!! I look after the farmers pigs when he goes away - its great fun, they are indeed noisy!!!!!! But very funny to watch - not a boring animal at all.......

Trewsers when have you ever resisted temptation? Get yourself down to the planning dept and get that application in.....go on, you know you want to.
