What to do with a rig?

Edited as I don't think we need to go in to that debate:o

Good luck Cupcake. If I were closer I would have come and helped you personally. I hope everything wears out.

If he gets the op and it is successful there is no reason why he can't be broken to saddle. His feet will come good with some TLC and Biotin supplement (a very good one is Horse Hoof feed and Repair)

I think he'll be easy to break into saddle once he stops trying to climb the fence and get away from me. He's a very smart boy, just out of his mind at the moment. Shame that he is so small as I doubt I'll be able to do much on him.

I won't have a computer for about a week so if any of you ask any questions on here I will try and answer them when I get back :)

I would rather have the vet come out to put my horse to sleep if she was in pain, old, or some other reason than truck her off to the knackery. I know that some horses are better off not living due to behavioural or medical conditions, but don't think they should end up at the knackery.

Wally - If the testicle can not be found then he will have to be put to sleep. I can't think of any other way around it. I'm not going to sell him to someone else, who will pass him on until he ends up at the knackery again. He isn't a suitable companion as he has quite bad hooves if not tended too regularily and he is aggressive to mares. Maybe if he responds to moody mare well then I can find him a home as a companion to geldings, but I won't risk him with my mares again.

Sometimes the right thing to do is often the hardest.

But fingers crossed it will all work out in the end. In my experience with my riggy pony before his op no supplement worked as he was producing more hormones than a stallion or mare in season.

Im sure if he has the operation and they find a testie then you will see a different horse in a month or so!! Good luck with him x x x

Grrrrr this is something that really bugs me! There is nothing wrong with knackers yards, they deal with the horses calmly and kindly and everything is humane (well the UK slaughter houses anyway). Its only wrong when they are subject to live transportation over hundreds of miles in poor conditions, slaughter houses arent the problem.

i must admit i disagree with this.............MOST of them are ok but no some arn't. In some horses are left standing for some time around the sights and smells which imo is distressing for them.

i have had horses from knackery's and i have also watched some/accompanied some being sent. things may have changed now but a few years back when i went they wern't all nice. I too would prefer to have my horse shot at home or put to sleep. However there is a place for knackerys and i don't have any problems for people that use them.

Mmmm this is why I edited my post. I agree with you and here in Australia the Knackers also have to follow guidelines - although some probably slip through the net:rolleyes: Unfortunately it is animal rights activists with their propaganda videos that paint a different picture - lets face it you won't see any humane treatment as it is not sensational:rolleyes:

I personally will not have my horse PTS using the injection, if I have to make that decision then I would want them shot.

Why would you want your horse going to a strange place to be pts? Why not let someone come to where he/she is kept and do it while you are there and can make sure they don't suffer any mistreatment? Some knackery places are fine, they are humane. But some are not. And the one that I went was not where I would want any horse to end up, no matter how sick they were.

Yes Pengapenga it would proberly be better for them to be shot.
But we wanted the chance to say goodbye without a hole in her head (sorry if that sounds stupid but it was what the owners wanted.)
When cupcake was given the injection for a few minutes she was fine. It was like she was in no pain at all, then she thudded to the ground and it was very destressing to see her so frightened. But she died with her head wrapped in my arms, something that could not happen in the knackery.

When I took Cobweb from the knackery he was skinny, filled with worms and had no muscle in which to speak of. When I think of the knackery that is the image I get in my head. He will not go there, it is not what I want his last images to be.

I'm rambling on now...Gosh that was a useless rant. Embarassed :o

Oh dont get me wrong, i would never send my horses to the knackery as I, like you want them to be at home when they die but thats just my ponies, i dont dispute others from sending horses there, its a personal choice and the knackery isnt a bad choice! Although personally my ponies will be shot as that way they dont have to deal with the feeling of being unbalanced as they do with an injection as well as dealing with a vet and a needle, at least shooting is instantanious.

As for your horse Cobweb coming from the knackery in such a state, this is likely to be his past owners fault, the knackery do not keep hold of horses so the condition your horse was in was clearly the condition that he arrived in and the knackers yard are in no way to blame for that.

You hope shooting is instant!

Shooting just stuns, then they are finished off by bleeding.

Meh. As long as they arent alive and kicking and trying to stand up in agony while having just been shot im not fussed.
