Will he grow any bigger ?

I know they dont stop growing until they are at least 8/ 9yo hes 7yo now I'm just curious to find out if he may get a little bigger hes 13hh now to me he doesnt seem bum high at all so I'm thinking hes stopped and will just fill out a bit more...im going to start riding him after recently loosing my other horse I'm not fussed if he wont grow any more I love him regardless I'm just curious
String him. Ergot to elbow, elbow to withers. Take twine or string or lead rope and hold one end in left hand at ergot (back of fetlock, you can feel point of bone) and take other end to point of elbow with right hand. Hold that end there and take the ergo end and pivot it up by withers. Where the ergot end is, is how much more growth you will get.

@Meljean I never found that measure terribly accurate, indeed when I tried it on my two years ago my 16.3 (that's all I admitted to lol) RID was supposedly not much taller than my barely 14.2 Welsh cob!

As we are clay soil I shorten the front of her feathers to the coronet in the winter. It also allows the hoof to dry.
I clip if I need to based on workload. But in summer I tend to plait the mane.

Eta, to be honest I can't see much difference between a 13hh cob and a 14hh cob. It's really just the leg length and wither that alters, the barrel frame is going to be same.

I might have to give that ago the mud near the gate in the winter field is horrendous and it's the only way out of the field it's just like a mud bath for pigs and it worries me with his feathers and mud rash but I make sure I put loads of mud barrier on his legs before he goes out so gives him some protection.
Iv got some turnout boots for him but hes lost one so can only use the 2 front at the min and I idealy want to protect all four of his legs not just 2

I think it's an inaccurate way to guess with all the various breed types.
A 12.3hh with long legs should be taller than my 14hh cob with short legs, who should be shorter.
I think cobs are meant to have short legs, that's all I will admit to. :p

That's the trouble I'm having too with my supposedly 17hh (that iv just recently had to pts ) I'd measure him some days and hed be 16.3hh then I'd measure him a few days later and hed be 17.1hh confused wasnt the word lol
Ozzy ( my cob ) go near him with the tape and he wont stand still iv tried using a licket/food he wont have any of it we managed briefly to get close enough with the tape one day and hes just 13hh some days I look at him and he seems taller so who knows but hes perfect regardless of his hight

I'll try that and see thanks

Mine is used to being measured. I was curious to know her bone and when she had boots she takes a bigger size than me.

But she doesn't do mud and I am not putting a rug over it so the princess can step on it!

Ozzys just wary of the tape for some reason I think
Hes not too bad with mud hes normally like look at me mum iv been mudding ( hes black at the mo ) he hates puddles wont walk through them stops dead and refuses to go any further
Hes not having a rug on unless it gets seriously seriously cold hes got a lovely thick winter coat. Hes still out 24/7 at the min from Tuesdays till fridays and the colds not bothering him everytime I check him hes ok not shivering or anything he will be coming in on a night from tomorrow night now because that's the yo rules they have to be in on a night before bonfire night but will have turnout during day

The different feeling with size is strange - with Hogan, I meet people when I'm riding, and so many say "Oh, he's big! " or once even "Is he a shire?" No love, not at 13hh. I think their bulk, and head carriage is deceiving. Ramsey was bigger, but quite fine, with a fairly low head carriage. Hogan carries his head quite high, and is quite a "unit", as my daughter says! Like you say - perfect in their way.

Ozzy Carrie's his head high hes got some lovely paces, hes taken to standing on one of the beams that's on his stable wall with his front too feet so he can see out more hes got a brilliant character and so cheeky too.
He still needs a bit of work he can be quite spooky in traffic at times but that's something we can work on together I walk him out in hand to help him get use to it and let him go at his own pace let him sniff things and inspect them and reassure him that hes ok I never rush him . I never really got the chance to do much with sarry before he was pts because of all his problems. But with ozzy its different and I'm looking forward to doing the things we can together that I couldn't do with sarry

I recall my instructor saying she's got a high head carriage. I can't really say I noticed. I only noted if she tossed it about or tucked it in. It suggested things were not happy at the front!

Interesting - is it a cob thing do you think? The high head carriage I mean.

 Re the string test - I have known this to be mildly (please note 'mildly - might be fairly accurate in some but a million miles out in another so really dubious about its use TBH) accurate in estimating a foals eventual adult height but to expect any sort of accuracy in a horse that is already 7 years old and highly unlikely to grow any bigger given his type and present height is just balmy!

OP I have had a heavy weight cob measure 15 hands at 4 and eventually measure 16.2 at 7 but no measurable increase after that age. Frankly though i think you coblet is SO gorgeous and you are never going to be too big for a leg in each corner type like that so just enjoy - I love him!

Showing total ignorance here - what is the ergot? How can I have horses for nearly 30 years and not know?

Some horses have on all four hooves, mine does.
It's a lump that grows at the back of the fetlock.

Photo I just happened to have.

Haha, Raf doesn't have them. When I first felt Jack's, in his feather, I had no idea what it was. I parted the feather and saw what looked like a bit of dirty old biro sticking out of his leg - you know those cheap clear plastic hollow ones. I called YO to have a look (Jack's got something sticking out of his leg!), she marched over and snapped it off (and then laughed at my horrified face) :D

Aah - thankyou! Ramsey had massive ones that grew like crazy - I used to lop them off. Don't think Hogans are as noticeable.
