And we’re there...

I was lacking motivation today, and when Monkey came in from the field like a thing possessed I nearly didn’t ride, but I’m glad I did!

He’s really growing up, although he was clearly feeling spicy he knuckled straight down to calm work and not a single spook, buck or jump was had!

We stopped for a couple of snatches of grass as it was too nice not to!

After yesterdays ride I gave Monkey a handful of oats, knowing he’d have a busy long weekend, I wasn’t quite sure what horse I would get today, but he was super chilled.

We headed out with no real aim, the wind was cold on the big track so we went towards the jumping pit as its more sheltered, I normally don’t really do anything more than trot up and down it but as he’s recently learned to jump properly in hand, I popped my stirrups up a hole and asked, and he happily obliged 🤩

We then whizzed through a wiggly track and back up the hill, he was very happy with himself! Another log we normally go around was begging to be jumped so we did, and cantered a long track up to a little wiggly deer path, before cutting back down to another fallen tree to jump, this one above my knee height and he merrily popped over it 🥰 he got a munch on some lush grass then as a reward. He was very pleased and was all whizzy all the way home, we even had a bit more than just a canter a couple of times as he felt so settled (not spooky!), such fun 😍

Our ride was interesting before it started today, as I brought them round to the barn Jess went on high alert, eventually I spotted why, there was a swan boat on the river at the back of the field! A 6ft swan was terrifying, I could hear Monkeys heart thumping in his chest and of course Jess went off to fight it (well as far down the field as she could get) and Monkey just didn’t know what to do with himself.
IMG_1270.jpegIMG_1271.jpeg

I tacked up with him pacing around but he settled a lot once we got going, though unusually he screamed a couple of times as we left. Once out he was a bit flat, I think yesterday took it out of him so we just had an easy ride.

I’ve got a friend coming over tomorrow to ride, so hopefully he’ll recharge his batteries tonight!

We had a corking ride tonight, he’s really lovely at the moment 🥰 went out like a beach donkey but as soon as I asked him to pep up he did, and we’d had a couple of nice trots and canters before we got to high lodge. Going up the verge of their driveway there’s this dinky little log
IMG_1283.jpeg
Now on our jumping roll, I thought I’d ask him to pop it, only being about 18” wide I didn’t have huge expectations, but after a tiny wobble each way to ask if I was sure he couldn’t just go around it, he sweetly popped over it, the boy can do a skinny! 🤩

We picked a new path (where machines have gone through to thin the trees), it was a bit rutted and up and down, but obviously pleased with himself, he decided we could trot it, and with sure feet he did, even leapt up one bank into canter 😁 then there were loads of branches across the track, I suggested we should in fact walk, he laughed at me and trotted it, I laughed so much I couldn’t get myself together to stop him. He’s getting so brave!
Then another similar path so I videoed him in 4x4 mode though kept it to a walk!
Then we did a bramble scramble to get back on a proper track and had a nice canter after I put my phone away
Near home they’re doing gas works, he couldn’t give a stuff about this lot! So brave!

He is so brave! Do you feel as though you can sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labour now? I enjoy riding AJ but it still doesn't feel 'comfortable'.

Yes, mostly! He’ll always be a little spicy, but I feel I can finally trust him to try for me, rather than just 180 and leave me to the monsters 🤣🤣 what makes me enjoy it more is just that he is enjoying it, before I felt a bit like he was only there because he had to be.

A fun little ride tonight, not long after we left my tummy was growling so I started snacking on the carrot sticks in my pocket, you should have seen the side eye I got 🤣🤣🤣 he was completely furious and confused all in one 🤣

We went out on the wiggly paths, he’s getting much stronger now, he’s game for even tight turns in counter canter where before he probably would have slowed for them.
IMG_1294.jpeg
I let him pick where we went after that, and he surprised me by not turning for home! We ended up passing the jumping pit and couldn’t help but pop a couple of logs!
Then we found a new trackIMG_1295.jpeg
It wasn’t there a week ago! Forestry must have been in doing something. It didn’t really go anywhere, but made a change. Back on the main track I again let Monkey choose where to go, and he surprised me again by turning away from home!

In the last bit of woods I was on the buckle and he suddenly veered off the track into trees
IMG_1296.jpeg
I was most confused, until I realised he’d spotted a dog walker through the trees and I think he was b-lining for them until he realised he wouldn’t fit between those!

Happy chappie on his nightly strip of fresh grass!

Another lovely ride! I started him on the naf magic to help with his travel anxiety, but it’s having a huge impact on everything, more than I expected! And he’s only getting 10mls 5/6 days a week (because I forget it), the recommend dose is 25mls. I don’t intend to keep him on it long term, but it’s really helping him for now.

I had mum on the phone on speaker in my pocket as we set out, a guy was jet washing his car on the road, no bother. Then we picked our way through all the roadworks, no problem. Got into the forest and I’m still chatting with mum while cantering along, he was so chilled!

Found some lovely recently logged and repaired tracks, which means they’ve power harrowed them, and with our sand soil they’re like gallops!

Past some big piles of aggregate which he’s always given the stink eye, but today he diverted and marched up to them for a closer look. Now his anxiety is under control, his curiosity takes over 👌
IMG_1301.jpeg
We had lots of nice long trots and canters, the forest was lovely and quiet this evening. We put up a big herd of 20+ fallow deer and he just carried on walking, watching them leap across our track into the thicker trees, then asked for a carrot for being so chilled about it 🤣

We went back through the houses and up the little paths between them, met barking dogs but he happily ignored them to chat to people.
IMG_1303.jpeg
Then a short stretch on the main (30mph) road through town, oncoming car slowed to 10mph very politely, but the one behind got mad and tried to overtake them, noticing us last minute and swerved back in. I thanked the first car with a big smile and wave, then shook my head and scowled at the idiot who was throwing his hands up in disbelief at the nice car still 🤬 Monkey was oblivious to any of it 👌

Got back into our home estate and 3 older ladies were stood chatting and as soon as they cooed at him he went for a chat 🤣 one lady was in her garden with her big German shepherd who wasn’t entirely sure about all this, so barked and ran around, Monkey just ignored him, then the dog put front paws on the fence to bark and I swear Monkey thought kissing him would make it better 🤣 I stopped him before he got himself in nipping range, but he stood, neck stretched, nose out, just curious to see the dog who eventually stopped fussing and wandered off 👍 and Monkey went back to the serious business of getting attention.

I decided because it was meant to be hot today to move the big ones back to the barn field so they had some shade in the heat of the day, that meant a lot of grass. Monkey looked pregnant tonight 🤣

He was very quiet to tack up, and didn’t get much more lively out
IMG_1316.jpeg
So our ride took much longer than usual! But we did manage a few trots and canters, though not with his usual pizzazz.

Our last few trailer trips we’ve stopped in one place, parked off to the side, as we got there tonight he turned and parked himself right were the trailer would be like he was hoping for a ride home, I did laugh, he’s so funny 🤣🤣

Early start this morning! It was 27c yesterday and I was absolutely shattered by the time I left work so I didn’t ride and knew I wouldn’t have time tonight and it’s meant to be 30c today, so I was out at 6am before work.

Monkey set out very forward, but after the 3/4 mile walk & trot to the forest he gave me less than half an effort when I asked for canter. Twice. I gave him the tiniest flick with my whip and got a buck! Around the next corner we met a deer who stood frozen long enough for me to get a picture

The light in the forest was fantastic

I asked for a right lead canter up here, but got left, so I slowed and asked again. On the 4th try he got frustrated and started bucking, and his bucks are heels above his ears though thankfully not get off bucks, just make your bloody mind up woman bucks. I continued with the start and stopping but he just got more and more frustrated. So I asked for left lead and let him go a 1/4 mile to get him over that. This whole scenario repeated twice more, I’ve never struggled to get him to pick up whichever lead I want. Eventually though we got it twice. Saddle and back were checked just 2 weeks ago, but I’ll definitely be having a bit of a poke at it tonight just in case.

I couldn’t believe it was only 8c out this morning, I had a light jacket on and was a bit chilly!

L&L came over today for a ride, it didn’t start great, Monkey was most offended by a wheelie bin being where it shouldn’t be, and a simultaneous piece of plastic blowing slowly along the road towards us which sent him backing and trying to spin for home. But he got his head back on and we had a great ride.

L has always been a nervous hacker, Jess helped her get out on her previous horse, and Monkey has been helping over the last year and today she had her first ever canter on her now 8yo mare (she got her as a weanling)! Huge moment, I’m really chuffed we could help her get there and she giggled all the way!

So we stopped at the pub on the way home to celebrate with a Diet Coke and lush grass!

It was as we were almost home that we met this Idiot driver going flat out in a 30mph!

L&M over for a ride today. Monkey was a bit spooky today even in the field, and went out jittering at nothing but oddly when a branch came down 12ft in front of us barely twitched! He then settled nicely after a long trot. And was then quite a dude, didn’t even flinch when M ran up his bum or when she had a bucking fit behind us, just kept trotting along 🤩
IMG_1355.jpegIMG_1359.jpeg
But he was not impressed when I put him behind on the way home
IMG_1361.jpeg
He’d been trying to stop for a wee but couldn’t, so I’m not sure if it was that, but trotting behind he had his ears pinned flat to his neck and coiled himself up like he might explode and just started bouncing before I stopped him. We tried twice with the same result. It’s so unlike him to do that, he wasn’t bothered being behind L&L yesterday. Hopefully it’s just a 1 off 🤞

I do enjoy an aimless wander sometimes, and so does Monkey!

We went out on the new disused track I found a couple of weeks ago, then back to a main one which Monkey suddenly decided he didn’t fancy and diverted of into uncharted territory 😂
IMG_1371.jpeg
It was thick with fallen trees and he just happily picked his way through 😁 he’s becoming a very good 4x4 horse.
IMG_1372.jpeg
We did some actual tracks for a while but we figured a bit more off roading was in order and off we went!
IMG_1373.jpeg
IMG_1375.jpeg
And had fun cantering the wiggly tracks when we popped out on one.

Snacks of cleavers on the way home for Monkey 😋
