laminitis now abscess 2

Not getting any supplements and not sure what the owners thoughts will be on that.[/QUOTE]

Direct them to our 18 month old thread and all we have been through, might just get through to them.......

Horses who are a good weight should be fed 2.5% of their body weight per day. Depending on their needs/exercise etc, depends on how its split between forage and hard feed.

I would be feeding 1.5-2% of body weight to reduce weight - it takes time, but much better than starving imo. Low quality hay, feed from the floor if COPD is an issue - if not then double net and soak if possible.

Thats what I was advised for madam :)

I look after some ponies in return for grazing and one of the ponies has lamanitis. She's approx 13.2 maybe a smidge less. Its been a week now of box rest and the vet said barely give her any hay. Approx 2 inches of a section spread out through the day. Most people I know with lamanitic ponies are giving much more than this.
has anyone got any advice? She is on straw so eating that ad lib which is fine but wouldnt this amount of hay be too little for her?
The owners have been dealing with the vet but I spoke to him today as I needed some more sachets to give her and he said he wanted to see more weight off her. But isnt that contradicting what lamanitis is all about or am I picking everyone up wrong?
I've never had any dealings with lamanitis so am ignorant but am reading up on it to try and advise the owners as they are not horsey.

morin all, loads of posts.. my horse went down with lammi on the 1st of jan 2009, i had never come across this, so i was in the dark, till i starting this forum and the ladies on here have help me throw some bad very bad times, with bobs, what i have learnt is by listening to everybody, but what works for them may not work for you and your pony, my vet is very good but from old school, first put your pony on deep bedding, shaving is good for me easy to clean out, and as your pony is on box rest you dont want to be adding to his stress, i did put bobs on hay but wouldnt eat it, which stress him out because he didnt like the hay, so i had him on haylage, never leave your pony without hay/haylage. and bobs was over weight his 14"2 and he was 438 in weight so he was a big boy, if you look in my album i think i still have a xray pic there of his hooves, both front feet, and both feet abcess one after the other. so heart breaking its un true to watch your pony in to much pain, bobs was on box rest for 15 weeks he was shod at the time, vet had taken off his shoes, and asked the farrier to put on the heatbar shoes. which at the time i didnt no any diffrent, i wish i did because the farrier wouldnt have gone any where never bobs with shoes, the heartbar shoes works when they where on but as soon as they came off, the pedal bone dropped even more. the heartbar was just holding it in place, wasent working, now when i think about it why the hell would you knock nails into a hoof wall that isnt attach to anythink??? its crazy.. and knocking nails in its just putting more infec into the hoof wall. but got to say shoes do help some ponys. but??? my vet put bobs on happy hoof, which didnt suit him at all, became very footy with it. all i would say is you as a owner no's your pony more than anybody, take advise from vets / farriers but you must unstand its not allways the right advise.. oops am on my soap box i better goin and feed bobs . its that time.

Morning all, thought I'd join in on this thread. My boy Max is very susceptible to laminitis, he's LGL-ed on me 3 times already this year despite not being overweight, only ever going out with a muzzle on, and coming in during the day to well soaked hay and a handful of fast fibre with his supplements in it.
Just to make things even easier(!), last week he had steroid injections in both hocks  so he's even more susceptible. Went out last night for the first time since the injections, came in sound but with very strong pulses in both fronts so I'm going to have to keep him in until they settle down before trying again.
Laminitis is such a PITA, the only good thing is that I can now spot it coming on at the earliest possible stage so I've managed not to let him get acute since he first had it.

hi all thats it when y pony is susceptible to lammi, you do get use to the signs so before it get out of control you can try and sort it, and it is long term, as i have said before i think it has a lot to do with there feeds we need to no more of whats going into them and the amount of sugers that companys use in the feed. they dont always tell you on the bags? bobs was fine this morin, no heat or pulse, but stiff but once out hes fine, hope all hooves are well, hows vicky deb's? hope shes doing ok x
nice day again here but need rain ground is so hard so bobs got boots on again today. his next trim is on the 24th, . look in later for updates

Certainly agree Bobcat , shoes on a lami pony does seem a mad idea. I was lucky with Ben as he was already barefoot so I would think there was less load on his hoof wall. Was lucky in that vet said to start riding him 5wks later so was able to get him to use a few calories :).It's so very hard to work out which feed works & which doesn't ,Ben goes footy on too much Alfalfa like the Simple Systems Lucie Stalks for example . Have bought some of the Pure Feed Co feed,no problem with feet at all, sadly d**n silly pony was an aggressive spooky lunatic so back to HiFi Lite & a very small handful of the rocket fuel.Am elderly with thin hair but my goodness it's gone thinner since pony got lami aaargh!

See oddly madams feet and allergies flared up when we switched from happy hoof to hifi good doer (also volcano time, and rush of grass LOL).

I hope the vet can convince insurance to pay out for allergy testing - She was in all day yeseterday as usual, I trned them out at 630pm - she couldnt stand still outside and came in after 20minutes or so. I went up at 630am this morning, and she was in and mutst have been for a while as Rascal was wet from rain. Shes cu her eyes open again, and rubbed tail little monkey. Looking thoroughly miserable. At parents now, other half been up to check them spray them and let out early as he was in work at 2 - she stayed put in the shelter and didnt want to go out :( but hey at least feet are ok!!! hope everyone is ok xxx

Evening all, thought would catch up between breaks on Britains Got Talent - hope everyone is well, really hot here today, Farrier for the other two today so have walked up and down to the field 6 times today ( 12 miles) - must say no way will I ever be overweight at this rate. Farrier pleased with their feet, a bit of Flare on Charlies, but hes not worried (10 weeks and hard ground).
Acorn was having a day up at his paddock, but they decided to have the water cannon on the field next door and his paddock is in the firing line so he had to go upto the field, he went up without his boots, fine in the field, I put his boots on coming back as don't want to over do him, but otherwise he is on top form, think we have the light at the end of the tunnel again - no bute tonight, going down to check on him soon just to make sure hes okay - rain due now for a few days so that will soften the ground up for everyone, trouble is there will be some really fresh grass out there folks! can't have it all ways can we:rolleyes:

anyway got to go want to catch rest of show will pop back in tomorrow for any updates, Keep safe

Morning all, Hi Tracey sorry to hear you are feeling ill, I am just about recovered thank God! Bloody theives you can do without them, as if not enough in life to worry about.
Anyway the rain is here as promised, grass looking greener already. Acorn up in his little paddock this morning, not happy running around (yes running & bucking) like a looney, have managed to get him settled down for now, fingers crossed no injuries tonight when I get him. I am wet through, just finished emptying the muck barrows/buckets from the other field down at the yard and forking it up - anyway done for another week.

hope everyone else is safe and well, How's Vicky doing Debs?

Hi Tracey, not sure on the Neck, Acorn has a hardish neck, always has so normal for him, but I know how to measure if trouble is coming - it changes the crest becomes more defined and lumpy if hes got a protien build up, Is Bobs weight still the same? not sure what you can do, maybe it is just him if it never changes, I will take a pic of Acorns Neck at some point so you can see what I mean - not the lumpy one don't want any of those thank you very much! Bobs is like Acorn not getting much if any work so maybe that has an affect on them, if in proper work then the neck carriage and muscles etc would be working in a different outline, maybe some one else has had experience of this?

Littleman has lost a little weight - didn't want him to but he has started not eating all his hay overnight and he getting the extra exercise now so will have to keep any eye on him, don't want him getting Ribby on me again, he was 151 kg this morning so thats 4kg loss this week:eek: typical if you want them to lose it they don't:rolleyes:

Still tipping it down here - land is getting a really good soaking, have you still got it? supposed to dry up around 5.00pm, lets hope, really don't fancy the walk to feed the other two in this lot.

anyway going to get changed, decided we will go out this lunchtime rather than cook. Have been busy cleaning and hoovering for past hour so had enough of that now - really not my thing;)

anyway back in later

Glad to hear Bobs & Acorn are doing well,am dreading the grass after the rain & then the sun on it ( feel I can see the blessed stuff growing ).As to the neck a friend has got a pony with the same problem, though to be honest he's way too fat. Two weeks ago he got lami very mild but hobbling on the Sunday much better by the Wednesday. Now his neck just before the lami had got a huge very hard crest with what I can only describe as an almost corrugated effect on the sides of the crest.Think it may be something to due with IR but not altogether sure, but as you're wary doubt you'll get as far as lami again. It is good to know others know how it is & can offer assistance on this board.

Hi Tracy,

The neck you are describing is very typical of lammis... the pony that lives next door to Vics has this and it literally goes up and down depending on the grass... in the week it was awful, hard , lumpy, rigid lumps, today after being kept off the grass for 3 days its much better. It is odd as Lucy never, ever had a crest, where as Vickys comes up very quickly.... its a sure sign of lammi. Its a very good 'indicator' to what the grass is up to... if that helps!

Vickys is doing well, shes now got the hang of her muzzle so is a very happy girl! still has warm feet and a hard, but not prominent crest...BUT had an awful weekend as my lovely bigmare, Dolly came down with colic:confused: I don't think we'll ever know what went wrong there as shes as solid as a rock. Poor girly has been quite poorly and its been extremely stressful and upsetting. Fingers crossed, shes on the up.

Great to see so many other people posting, I know how awful it is, but as a group we have the most amazing support network, and we can all help each other. It has made me see after Lucy, that no 2 lammi cases are the same, every pony/horse shows it in different ways.

Hope all hoofs are safe and as well as can be D x

Hi, just wanted to join in with this thread and say "hello" Our Wee Robbie - sec B has had lammi with previous owner but we arent sure how far back, thinking about it - I think he had a touch just before we bought him but he came from a dealer with not much history so knew nothing about him or the lammi until I got in contact with the people listed in his passport (very thin when he came with boxy feet, we put him out on the grass to fatten him up:eek:)

Anyway, just to say that Rob has been on Global Herbs Lammi Prone since we found out he'd prev had lammi (approx 3 years)and I swear by the stuff, some people only give it to their ponies/horses in summer but we give it all year round just to be on the safe side.

So far (runs off to touch wood) he has been fine but we are always on our guard just incase. Rob has an awful crest all year round but we think he was cut very late which wouldnt have helped with the crest.

Hi and Welcome, its great we are getting all these new posters sharing experiences, there is always something to learn.

Like Rob Acorn has had a crest a while, infact when he was showing as a 2 /3 yr old we were constantly asked was he def a gelding - we wonder ourselves sometimes wether there insn't a bit left somewhere his whole attitude shouts I have still got some hormones :) great to hear another voting for lammi prone - I swear by it and yes he will get it all year round, but I have upped his level during the last few weeks will drop down to maintenance mid summer and then up again for the Autumn flush and then maintenance again for winter - at least thats the plan. TBH my main worry is winter and injury, Acorns 2 episodes have following injury/kept in/stress and both in winter - we now turnout rather than box rest (with agreement from Vet) as it would appear exercise intolerance is a major issue for him, something we learnt the hard way first time around, this time he has not struggled as much in recovery, although the frost didn't help there.

do keep posting and sharing

Hugs for Dolly from us Debbie, hope shes better soon, bloody awful thing colic , our Josh coliced 5 time within as many hours when he had an abcess, the last time they said if it didn't work then there was nothing more they could do - we were lucky it did, we lost him a year later but he had ongoing health issues, never want to go through that again. Yes that neck sounds like what happens to Acorns, I check morning and night and monitor differences, my problem is I can't keep him in for long due his not been able to cope with lack of exercise, a day or two at most, but I always make sure he gets walks out to try and reduce him tying up. As you say no two are the same there is always a tweak or two from the standard lammi management as we have all found out the hard way.

Sounds as if Vicky is on the right track now though - you must be relieved.

anyway going for a rest now, only 6 miles of walking today! I do keep reminding my daughter that there will be a day when I do get Old;)

This rain has meant no riding lesson for Emma this week, so next week with Acorn coming back to form she should be able to get back on him.

Hows Declan doing?

I keep telling you Tracey you are a cruel Mum!;) poor Bobs - no raincoat, his highness would be upset. Bet he wasn't as mad as my little s**t when I got him in, foul mood:eek: left in his paddock, in the rain, hardly any grass, no friends and a big scary Red Pumping machine in the field next to him, it didn't have to be working shooting water out, just stood there was monster enough. anyway hes in now, scoffed his dinner and picking at the nasty hay mum has left, hoping its okay so he can go upto the field tomorrow, hes certainly much better on his feet, no Bute again tonight, he just had a little during the day, hoping to get him off that next few days.
anyway I am going now, all these new posters its taking me twice as long to catch up with everybody, but its great to have the fresh input and ideas and share experiences.

I will be back tomorrow for more updates, keep safe

I've been away but oh and his mum have been pony sitting. Sil hasn't left the shelter all weekend - neighbour reports said the same, she must be really down in the dumps. On the up only one sighting of blood on legs yest, and none today although mil said looked like her nose had been itched but it was scabby when i left.

As for necks, sil has a cresty neck which gets corrugated, although i was too ignorant to realise it was happening last summer. Although slim line hasn't helped weight, it has coincided with less crest. Could be coincidence or the illusion between mammoth and summer coats. Will post some pics when on a computer :)
