laminitis now abscess

I have to agree with janc... my farrier got the shoes off (even though shes a lami) he told me the abscess needed an exit point and the shoe could well be blocking it (which it was in her case) ... but saying that, hers took ages to drain and showed signs of coming out the corrinary band as well. She went lame on the other leg as well but this was bruising due to the amount of weight bearing this leg had to do. My farrier sent me up to the chemist to buy several tubes of arnica and this did the trick for the 'good leg'. HE also trimmed her feet so she was level at all times (had this done 3 times in the month as her little hoofs were growing like mad at the toes)We had to keep our ponys foot moist as her foot had dried up and was rock hard, so the soaking worked enough to let the abscess out eventually. Our girl was on box rest but interestingly she refused to put her foot on anything but the rubber matting, she could not stand on the straw (possibly because she was so wobbley she felt unsafe balencing on 3 legs...) WE gave 1 sachet of bute but half in morning, half at night. I check your thread everyday to see how your boy is, as I really do feel for you both. But as everyone else has said (and we all have all had lamis with this problem) it is a waiting game and the relief he will feel when it comes out is imense. Take care and keep going, it won't last forever although I know it does feel like that.
 
Good Morning, I hope it is for you both.... hows he doing, any sign of it maturing yet? if the foot is only going down for a few seconds at a time(prob to give some relief or balance) then for me hes near enough on 3 legs if hes still the same this morning then I would be ringing the vet and see if it time to get the farrier in at last to sort it...... my farrier wouldn't without Vets go ahead.

thanks for your message, just came from him now, hes not good, hes moaning with every move he makes, he coudnt even wee prop this morin he hate getting it on his legs, so if he see me putting a bucket under him hes fine :) no wee on legs... am very upset when i see him like this, dont no what to do?

he not good, hes trying not to put any weight on it but still is putting it down,was in tears with him this morin watching him trying to move around, what would you do is it time to call vet out? hes moaning very time he moves

If you don't hear from or can't get vet first thing in am please, please call the farrier. Very worried the shoe is blocking the abscess and if the poison tracks up the leg its very bad news. I've been tracking this thread and worrying for your boy - concerned that the vet is not on the ball. Check for warmth in the leg, coronary band, also check other legs in case the pressure of his weight distribution for his pain is causing probs in them. Hate to be interfering with your vet and adding to your worries but feel very strongly that your horse needs his shoes removed, his foot poulitced and movement. This feeling of helplessness is awful, I really feel for you but try and sleep and get it all sorted tomorrow. You could easily see an immediate response and recovery :) x
 
Hi Tracy, just checking in - I am really hoping the Vet is with you as I write this and there will be some good news for all today, I am sure once your farrier can gets his hands on him things will move on quickly...... my little man was a little footy this morning and between leaving the yard and getting to the field he has blown another abcess in his hind (on his weak side) so that explains his sluggishness last couple of days, saying that he was like a pocket rocket going in last night, so hot tubbing and poulticing again for me for a few days to clear it,he will be turned out though as no way are we going backwards with this stifle,hopefully we can then get back to normal as his muscles are getting stronger everyday now and he can now fully stretch all four, seems to have been never ending and you know the feeling well....... they are such a worry....... thinking of you both and will keep checking in for next update.......

phone vet this morin hes coming out this afternoon, to see what he can do re-abcess just hope he can drain it today, bobs in a lot of pain and dosent help him me standing there crying over him, only got am hour sleep last nite worrying about him, so hope its good news today, so sorry to hear your poor boy gone down with it again, they must be so fed up only if they could talk? x
 
Do let us know how you get on , fingers crossed today is the first day of recovery for you both....... mines not that fed up, only in respect he can't go in the big fields yet only the small paddock so takes it out on me, Nasty mummy! I was quite suprised as there had been so signs, no heat,swelling etc and I pick out twice a day and have been checking all 4 closely as I know this can happen when they have had lammi/mobility issues, just something niggled at me this morning when I got to the field to have a look, just the way he walked across it, anyway at least its broken and draining now
so I can deal with it.

Will check in later to see how you have got on..... I am hoping it will be positive news.....

What are we going to do with you two?? Lemme and Bobcat...! Now got double the worry! Hoping both of your boys are as well as can be and that Bobs has been sorted by the vet. I was in my local feed merchants earlier and the lady asked how our girlie was, she told me she had never heard of so many horses having abcsess's this year, she has a 10 month old fresian foal and thats had 2 already this year...very, very strange. As always, will check later for more news from you both.... By the way, where in the UK are you Bobcat...? Just wondering if by chance you are anywhere local to Wiltshire, as if you are would be more than willing to visit and give you a bit of moral support x

Seems to be the winter for Abcesses Bigmare, suprising how many people are experiencing them up here as well....... going now to check on mine, suspect he will just be mad cause he's not been in the big field again, Farrier has asked me not to poultice, keep an eye on the foot and he will come out Sat am if needs be and check it, hes not hopping lame or anything, just footy but that could be the morning stiffness with his stifle.... i'll see how he is tonight when I left he was busy pulling our Welsh A's mane again in a tantrum over the fence, so he's not too out of sorts........

hi its 5.15, just got back from bobs, well vet been dug at his feet bit of blood?bobs wouldnt stand still which i didnt think he would with it hirting so much so the poor boy got a jab, well the out come is could not find abcess, so he got to stay in till friday then over wkend he can go out into the small paddock, half a day every day, the farrier is to come out monday and remove the heart shoes because there not doing him any good, so i think there going to leave him without shoes i think? but will no more on monday,ask if hes still treating for lami or is it now abcess? vet not sure but think its abcess but not come to head yet.... x
 
Hi Tracy :) So glad the vet has taken the time to see him! Why the wait til Monday to remove shoes? Did the vet give a good reason? Does he know why he's digging where he's digging? How much spring grass is in this paddock that he's being turned out on after no grass for 3 months? Do you know of other specialists in your area that you can turn to for help? My children are now asking me how your horse is! I realise I'm nagging you with questions but only because I want the best outcome for you both.:o

re shoes i think its to let his feet rest after digging at them today with him being very sore, we have had xrays taken and the last x-ray came up with a dark spot, which vet says is the ascess, to be truefull i would not like the farrier to take them off him yet as i would hirt him... ( and i got no more tears left after today):( the paddock has no grass and his only going to have a very small area, of his paddock, and with him no worse but only a bit better it will do him good to get out in the paddock, he been a very good boy staying in for the time his has, because he hates being in , been to see him tonite again, and hes not to bad on his feet tonite so he may have releast some of the prssher on his foot by doing what he did today, but wasnt good to watch :(
