laminitis now abscess

Morning, hope you got yourself a good nights sleep....... progress at last, I know it seems slow but at last you are starting to see a light at the end of the tunnel I hope, Hope Bobs is feeling more comfortable this morning, damn abcesses, you keep your spirits up and look after yourself you will be no good to Bob exhausted.... do let us know how everything is today.....thinking of you both, will check in later, bet you can't wait to see him out in the paddock, it will perk him up no end to get out ..........

Keep seeing an improvement in mine each day, when I spoke to the farrier he told me not to touch his back foot just keep an eye on it, he will come out on Sat if needs be but he thinks its just excess moisture from within the hoof he would be suprised if it is an abcess so he was spared the hot tubbing and poulticing, checked it this morning, its dry and the foot is cool no sign of it bothering him and he is stretching and flexing fine on it. Just me being paranoid then I think but will be keeping a close eye out. We had a breed show planned for first weekend in April but think it will be a miss unless he comes completly sound, hes almost tracking up but still a little short moving off.
He was in good spirits this morning having his usual tussel with Charlie over the fence and is looking to get in with them, only thing is there will prob be quite a to do so seperation at the moment may just avoid any forced injuries, we do not want to be back at square one with him.

been with bobs most of the day and hes no worse for what he went throw y-day, changed his dressing what the vet said do every day and that was ok to do bobs let you pick it up today the last fews days he wouldnt the only way i could pick out his feet if he was laying down, so that was good to day. i dont no if this is mind over matter but he seems better in him self today, dont no why, the abcess wasnt drained, so i dont no?

any way time to go back to him, luckly the stables are only 5mins from r house, and ive got no jobs at the min saying that i would not leave him ,i would have to send hubby on his own to work :) hope y little man is ok tonite

Morning Tracy,

its sounds as if both of you are feeling more relaxed, I often think if you display anxiety they pick up on it and feel it and express it as well, stay postive things are moving at last.

What are you dressing with? bet you can't wait to get him out in the paddock over the weekend, hopefully the walking on it will get that abcess moving and when the farrier comes on Monday you will be able to get it sorted, just don't despair if he looks pathetic when you turn him out, remember its for his own good and part of his road to recovery, see it as a positive step.

i've got farrier coming out in morning to check little mans feet,there is no heat , pulses or anything, probably won't need to do anything but at least I will feel happier, he did seem to walk out a little better this morning, not quite as stiff as normal, the stifle is not locking now but noticed a slight lock on his hock , just going to be time methinks... oh well we have plenty of that, however long it takes.. still sparring with Charlie over the fence, just hope they keep away from each others manes or we will be showing with bitty manes when we do get out and about.

Will check in with you over the day again, meanwhile keep smiling and be strong, I expect the emails next week will be a lot different to what they have recently.......

As you have not posted I am taking it things are either getting better or same and you are enjoying time with him, thinking of you both, have a really good weekend and will catch up on Monday

sorry internet has not been working over wkend,so could not leave messages.

didnt try bobs out y-day (sat) it was very windy and he wasnt to good on his feet, (sunday) well got him out of the stable his very stiff and unsteady on his feet, got him as far as the the stable next to his with his friend in it, jacko, and he stopped shared a hay net with jacko, which is great to see, as jacko is a stallion but a very sweet boy, bobs finished his hay turned around and wanted to go back to his stable, just dont no what to do, i thought he would have wanted to go out but he must be in pain, with the abcess not come out yet, the stiffness is worrying me now, with him not being a young horse, HELP! XX

Was getting very worried, can't tell you how many times I've checked!!! I can honestly say that my little mare didn't want to move either... I would leave her door open when I was there and somedays she would come out and have a nosey about (usually got stuck and then took me ages to get her back into a suitable position to move again) other days she just stayed put. He will only do what he feels he can do, the problem is that they do seize up especially the oldies (my girls 22) I did massage her everyday and gave her muscles a good rub (she loved this) I think you will find that when the farrier comes tomorrow and takes his shoes off, he will find the tender point where the abcsess is sat and be able to drain it (it took 2 major attempts to get to Lucys, they knew where it was but had a hard job getting to it. Once its drained, in a few days his mobility will get back to normal (I did have the chiropractor out as well as her whole body had 'locked' up from where she had been stood for so long and holding herself rigid, this was the best thing ever for her, again only because shes an old lady and gets stiff at the best of times!) I wish you could see her now, I still can't believe that going from being in so much pain and that chronically lame to becoming sound and full of beans again... Thinking of you both, hope tomorrow goes well and be FIRM with your farrier! Take care x

just been back to bobs to see if he will come out of stable you can see he wants to but his little legs want carry him. when farrier come out tomorrow i dont think hell take off shoes bobs just want put any weight on his other front leg (abcess foot) he want let me pick it up to clean the only way i get to clean that hoof is when hes laying down at lunch time, its so bad to watch as you no your self with your girl being 22, to look at bobs hes looking great, shine on this coat, vet said hes not getting better like he should be, am worryed if am doing something wrong? :(
 
I do so feel for you... I saw your picture of him today bless him! Like Bob, Lucy still looked great... She still had that 'twinkle' in her eye and was not acting like an ill pony (do you know what I mean without sounding silly?!) She was alert, ate and drank well, the problem was she could not weight bare at all, therefore hardly moved but layed down constantly (I mean every 20mins or so) This went on for just over 3 weeks. I doubted myself and I hated what was happening, but I had good sound advice from several farriers (my vet was useless.... I'll tell you about that another day) So apart from being totally crippled she appeared normal (which I found very hard to deal with as it was so conflicting) It took several people and the farrier to hold her up (we had to put her against the wall) to get her shoe off and she went mad... I just sat and held my friends hand and cried and was pathetic, but it was worth it as it had to be done. YOur farrier will do what he thinks best, he knows Bobs, .... let us know tomorrow how it goes and will be thinking of you and hpoing & praying it gets sorted for both of your sakes. Debbie x
 
Morning Tracy, just picked up your Post, so sorry this weekend was not we had all hoped for you both, lets hope today brings better news for you and Bob....... don't doubt yourself, you are not doing anything wrong , you can only do as the professionals advise..... its is heatbreaking to watch them I know, I had to walk mine out and he looked pathetic, had people wispering behind our backs no doubt to how Cruel I was being, but we had to get him mobile again for his sake, he is short only on rough ground now and stiff when he comes out of the stable in the morning but each morning there is a slight improvement, once he gets going he is full of beans in himself, but it has been a slow road and I like you both have wept like a baby at times....... he had the farrier on Saturday and he is well pleased with his feet, no imbalances , nothing needed doing so that was a boost, will see how we go this week, increased his in hand and we are going to start long reining again........

thanks for your message, when i read this i had tears in my eyes your poor girl,

farrier didnt come out to day he rang and ask about bobs i said he wasnt good, and would like to leave it for a few days as he is so stiff and sore on his feet , the farrier agreed to leave him for a few days, because i think hes going to have a go at diggin the abcess again :(... well left door open today for him to walk out in his own time. and he didnt, just had his b-fast and then his hay, i put his hay net up today he normal has a haybar, but i thought he has to move more with a haynet, and i put his food the other end of stable so he has to move around which at the moment he isnt doing, he just stands in one spot, ie! poos and wees in the same spot,... it work anyway he had to move if he wanted any food, any way got there tonite, left door open and there he was heading for the bit of grass outside his stable, which was good to see, even if his walk was very unstable, he made it .:)

really sorry to hear all the problems you are having, I really feel for you. My horse came down with Lami and has been on box rest since 7th Jan, I turned her out in a small bare paddock for the first time yesterday, the last few months have been horrendous and I have been in tears on a few occasions, she doesn't do box rest so has been sedated most of the time. Touch wood so far no abscesses but there is still time. You just feel so helpless. Throughout Lily has been healthy, shiny coat, huge appetite as she was on a very strict diet.

I am shocked at how the vet or farrier don't seem to be overly forward in coming out, maybe I have misread or misunderstood the posts, I was on the phone to my vet most days and he was out lots! I have an excellent EP too who has been invaluable. If you are really concerned there is never any harm in getting a second opinion, there are many different trains of thoughts on lami, Lily has no shoes and was on a deep bed which was enough to support her (she had been unshod for 3 years any way) and if you can get the shoes off it would make sense.

Is the lami itself under control now or is it a mixture of both? Was there any pedal bone rotation (sorry if you have said this and I missed it)!

Really hope things improve

The moving of the food, buckets etc does work! I'd put Lucys somewhere different every time I went in, that way I knew if she'd moved (not nice but they will) The door open was an 'open' invitation and she quite often did her venturing out when I was off doing the water!! It all helps! I posted a few pics of her in my album last night for you to see...;) I know this is hard (please believe me because I had to do it for my peace of mind) but maybe get another opinion....Tiger the Pony is right... Has the farrier and vet ruled out the pedal bone???? Anyway, todays another day, we're all here waiting and supporting you both and wishing we could make it all right for Bobs... take care x

Checking in seems to be the first thing I do when I get to work I really was hoping things had moved on, in one respect they have he has moved out on his own, I know its awful to see but in the long run it is necessary, If it was me I would have let the farrier come out Tracy, he could then have looked and made the decision what was best to do, I know you are only trying to protect him but that does sometimes cloud our judgement, I know I waved on the edge a few times over the past months and that is natural you just want to take the pain away.......but like most things they seem to get worse before they get better....... I really do feel for you both but it if was me I would ask the farrier to come out and let him make the judgement call, he will be looking at it from a totally different angle than you, we are just too close sometimes, I know I was at times...... I do hope today is a better day for you both and as already said there are a lot of people routing and supporting you in this, its just a shame we are so far away.........

just came back from bobs, hes not good this morin, he just about got up from floor, have call vet wait for return call, and phone farrier again got answear fone waiting for call back, he did get up in end, but is so unsteady on his feet a few times i through he was going to fall, ( yes tears came):( gave him a rub down to try and get his legs moving.. left door open but no he didnt want to come out, just had a good luck around then back up and went to hay,

in xrays the vet said the pedal bone had moved not much but it had moved, the 2ns xray was taken just over a week ago and there was no change so it had not gone worse but no better, just dont no what else to do. him want loosen up because he want come out. what else would you advise?
 
Sorry he's no better, it's so hard and just keeps you so low. It's tiring too emotionally and physcially caring for them when they are like this.

Personally I would get farrier out asap to have the shoes off and keep him in a deep bed, don't worry too much about him moving around and worrying about getting stiff at the moment concentrate on the lameness. If I was you, honestly, I would have a second opinion from another vet asap too - the sooner you do something the better as so far waiting and seeing has don nothing! That's my thoughts any way!!
