Rubber Riding Boots

Well, I confess I always wanted a pair!!!!!!!!! Alas, my legs are too fat for them, and I harbour a morbid fear that in the shop trying them on I won't be able to get them off or get stuck half way and have to lie down and have them wrenched off........................!!! I've settled for Mountain High Riders cos they have a zip.
Still would love a rubber pair tho - they look nice and fitted - Mountain riders are so chunky! I have the Sportive ones too tho, they are alittle more streamlined........

I wear rubber riding boots whenever I go riding and I find that I have trouble holding my lower leg in the correct position. a friend of mine even advised me to get half chaps and joddy boots

I had long rubber boots as a kid and hated them with a passion, had jod boots after that with chaps which I do love. Got some MH High Riders a couple of weeks ago with Xmas money and love them - can't believe how different it is, helped by the fact they are a perfect fit on first wearing. Will go back to jod boots and chaps for summer though I expect.

horrible things, long rubber boots. I finally invested in a decent pair of long rubber boots (Agile) but a mouse died and fell in and decomposed in them and I had to throw them out:rolleyes:

did everyone else's rubber boots regurgitate their insides at some point?? Meaning that all the lining came out attached to your foot each time you took them off?

Yep, regularly. And every pair of boots you borrowed from the yard did the same:rolleyes:

In answer to OP question - don't splash out on leather boots - it's not worth it. Buy a pair of good jodphur boots and chaps instead - they're much more comfortable and will last much long. Leather boots are lovely but not worth it unless you ride daily or keep them for competitions.

I personally don't like them. They don't have nearly as much grip, and don't fit as well as leather boots. Try paddock boots and half chaps if you can't afford leather tall boots...but no rubber boots...you probobly will regret them.

My parents wouldn't let me buy leather boots until I had done with my growth spurt, so up until I was 16 I rode in my Aigle rubber boots, that had the insides come out every time I pulled them off, and "lovely smelly feet" as a thank you for a nice ride. I quite liked them, they weren't stiff or anything (maybe because of my contunuous use of them), and I could feel the horses flanks alright.

Then I got my first pair of leather boots as a birthday gifth. They were really fancy custom made boots I got all the way from Germany. They were horrible stiff at the beginning, but as soon as they shaped up around my leg they were the comfiest ever. I use to live in them! :p Then I.. umm.. gained weight.. and now can't fit in them!!! I have a beautiful pair of boots at home I can't fit in, and probably never will as I had very skinny calfs back then.. :(

After that I just rode in short boots and half chaps. Best short boots in my opinion: Ariat waterproofs! Can ride as long as you want, they feel great in the stirrup and you can afterwards walk all day long without your feet getting tired or wet! :D

I just bought myself a pair of custom made Polo boots (they are a part of the safety kit for Polo) and am now trying to get them to soften up as they are even stiffer than my dressage boots were, but I can already say they are going to be very nice eventually! :)

So although rubber boots are not bad in my opinion, it is leather boots all the way! :p

I personally hate them, IME, you cant feel the horse through your boots, and my calfs wont fit in them even though im skinny. Whoever designed them needs to look at horse riders tlegs, and then re think how they're made  However, just my opinion lol

Decathlon sell long rubber boots with elastic "gussets" in the upper legs. They look quite smart (for rubber boots) and seem to be quite comfortable.

The biggest advantage in this type of weather is being able to wash the boots easily when they get dirty

Ugh, I detest them. I cannot ride in them, they make my leg position awful, and they make me flap. Buy a cheapy pair of short boots&chaps.

Oh I thought of something else - did everyone else's rubber boots regurgitate their insides at some point?? Meaning that all the lining came out attached to your foot each time you took them off? :p And never quite went back in properly...? I ended up cutting the feet of all of mine, then wearing thick socks which was very uncomfy .
Perhaps I just took them off wrong! It's been short boots and chaps for me for a loooong time now though.

Mine did that recently!

My advise is don't get them. Stick to jodhpur boots and half chaps or leather riding boots. I am going back to the former as soon as I get to my nearest saddlery and get a new pair!

I've always ridden in short boots and chaps, and though I hankered after a pair of long leather boots, never thought I'd afford a pair, or find a pair wide enough for my calves.... what is it with manufacturers? Do they not know that even fairly slim riders usually have chunky calves- I'm a UK size 10-12, hardly massive, but STILL have problems getting boots to fit my 'chunky' calves.. but I digress...!

This year, having got sick of loosing my wellies in the mud, constantly changing from wellies to short boots and chaps to ride, and back to wellies to turn out and muck out, and getting shavings, hay and sh1t in my wellies and consequently in the house, I decided to kill two birds with one stone and get a pair of long rubber boots.. only I couldn't find a pair that fitted my calves:mad:

I ended up buying a second hand pair from a mate- a size too big, but went over my calves, and I could get thermal socks in them.. and they are great for doing yard work and going on a short hack or doing half an hours schooling, but as everyone has said, you can't really keep your lower leg position well in them, and they squeak against the saddle, and if it's warm your feet bake, and if it's cold they freeze:rolleyes:

I've solved my problems however, 'cause my brother gave me some money and I bought a pair of Harry Hall Faro long leather boots- they are the most supremely comfy boots I've ever worn, they give me a great lower leg position, and they are the only boots I've ever worn that keep my lower leg still in trot:D Got mine for £70 (get a discount at my local tack shop:D ) and I'll DEFINITELY be replacing them when they wear out... and I doubt very much I'll be going back to short boots and chaps in the summer either:)

I also ride in chaps and jodhpur boots. I just have a question though. Can a person over age 16 show in chaps and jodhpur boots, or only in long boots? I suppose it depends on how formal the show is.

I don't like them, even though when I got back into riding after a VERY long break I had a pair :o

Personally I think they look really naff and usually its the beginners you see wearing them, once you've progressed with your riding most people move on to joddy boots and chaps or long leather boots.

I really don't mind them. I find them quite easy to ride in, but i tend to save them for shows. Short boots and half chaps are alot easier to get into and out of :)

Buy a pair of aigle ecuyer boots, they are fabulous considering they are rubber. I do have long leather cavallo boots, but rubber is far more practical, easier to keep clean etc.

Aigle boots are so soft you shouldn't have any problems with leg position really ( i don't), and buy them a little bit big so you can wear thick socks.

Personally, I think people just get a little snobby over rubber boots, they see them as "beginers wear".

not snobby, just find them cold in winter, hot in summer and smelly. But then I've never had a decent quality pair.

Long leather boots need not be expensive - I bought mine second hand (apparently only used 3 times, they did seem really new) from ebay £18 and bought daughters gorgeous italian half lace up (narrow fit) ones brand new on ebay for £30.

Everyday riding: leather joddy boots canvas halfg chaps )zip up) with a suede insert where your lower leg meets the horse's side..

Well I am fascinated with long rubber riding boots - I have three pairs of Mountain High riders - but I still hanker after the rubber ones, because they look smart and they are neat - I find Mountain Riders a bit chunky. Tho they are warm and grippy for yard work. I have the High Rider Sportives, they're a little more streamlined I must admit. My legs are just too darned thick for rubber ones, I have a phobia that I'll have to be cut out of a pair if I get them on...........

i have only ever worn long leather boots...which cost me forty pounds (i don't know what that equates to in dollars and whatnot), but i was surprised at how cheap they were. i'd normally pay more than that for a pair of trainers!
they're super comfy and they don't rub!
